It’s Game 5 in Washington tonight between the Maple Leafs and Capitals. The Caps were able to get back on track in Game 4, as they held on for a 5-4 win against the Leafs at the ACC on the road in Toronto. Washington got off to a fast start, with T.J. Oshie cashing in right from the opening gun.
It was quickly 2-0 without blinking an eye. It looked like for a second that the Maple Leafs were going to comeback yet again, but all they could manage to do is bring it to 5-4 late in the contest.
As far as this series is concerned, the Maple Leafs are already winners in a lot of people’s eyes. Like I said before, they’re getting a plethora of experience in this game, which is going to springboard them into the coming season.
Nevertheless, the Leafs want to win and win now. They’ve proven they can hang with this Capitals team, so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibilities. However, a win in this important swing game is going to be crucial.
Do I see the Leafs beating the Capitals at home, and then winning a Game 7 in Washington? No, which is why this game is of the utmost importance for the Leafs. The prospect of the Capitals coming back from down 3-2 is a little easier to envision.
There aren’t many people who say the Leafs hanging around and giving the Capitals much of a challenge. When you look at the makeup of the Maple Leafs’ roster, though, it’s not the most farfetched.
In what I see as the most important game in this series, the Maple Leafs and Capitals square off in Game 5 at the Verizon Center in Washington. Get our free Maple Leafs vs. Capitals pick here at The Sports Geek.
Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Washington Capitals Game 5 Pick
When the Capitals’ offence is clicking, it’s extremely difficult to slow down. If they find a groove, it can be lights out for the opposing team. The Caps’ offence came to life in Game 4, striking the Leafs for 5 goals in their best performance of the playoffs thus far.
The Capitals finished 3rd overall in scoring per game during the regular season, notching an average of 3.18 goals per game. In the playoffs they are 2nd in scoring.
The Leafs, with their young and talented playmakers, have averaged 3.05 goals per game against the Capitals. There has been no shortage of frustration in the defensive end for the Caps against this pesky Maple Leafs squad.
I find the Leafs’ defence slowing the Caps down now is going to prove to be a tall task. I expect them to hit their stride on offence for the rest of the series. It makes for bad news for the Maple Leafs, but don’t discount this group in Toronto. We should see another goal fest tonight in Washington. The OVER looks like a good pick in Game 5 between the Maple Leafs and Capitals.
