Montreal Canadiens vs. Florida Panthers Pick – NHL March 29, 2022

The Montreal Canadiens and Florida Panthers drop the puck at FLA Live Arena. Montreal is looking to get back on track following a 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils in a shootout on Sunday.

This hasn’t been a season that the Habs want to remember. A year after a trip to the Stanley Cup Final, the Canadiens are 18-37-11 and own 47 points in the Atlantic Division.

That has the Canadiens as the eight-best team in the division, translated to dead last in the Eastern Conference. Only the Arizona Coyotes are worse than the Canadiens this season.

It’s crazy to believe that the Canadiens are less than a year removed from going to the Stanley Cup Final, but this is where they are now.

They fired GM Marc Bergevin in November, and then head coach Dominique Ducharme followed last month. This is a season for the Canadiens to clean house.

The Panthers are on the other side, though they didn’t can their head coach under different circumstances early in the season. It wasn’t because this was a bad team struggling.

Florida is 44-15-6 and first in the Atlantic with 94 points. The two Florida teams assume the top spots, with the Lightning at 88 points.

A word of warning for the Panthers from the Lightning: peaking in the regular season doesn’t always translate in the playoffs. The Bolts know all too well that dominating regular season play and winning the Presidents’ Trophy doesn’t always work out well.

On Sunday, the Panthers are coming off a 5-2 loss to the Maple Leafs in Toronto. The Panthers were on a three-game streak after a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators in a shootout on Saturday.

Canadiens vs. Panthers Prediction:

The Canadiens are seeing goals, but it isn’t them doing the scoring. Montreal is 31st in the NHL with 3.7 goals against per game. They are allowing a lot of shots in the process.

This isn’t so much a goaltending issue as it is a whole team issue. The Canadiens would be better off with Carey Price in the crease, but what’s the point in having him at this stage.

The Habs are having a bad season, and the intention is for Price to return to calmer waters in Montreal next year. Jake Allen is trying to hold the fort down, but it isn’t going so well.

Allen goes into Sunrise with a 3.09 GAA, and 0.908 save percentage. He’s especially shoddy on the road, where Allen has a 3.73 GAA, and 89.71 save percentage.

There is unlikely to be pushback from the Canadiens versus the Florida attack tonight. The Panthers are relentless, as they lead the league in scoring at 4 goals per game and shots with 37 per game.

When the Panthers are home, they’ve been an unstoppable juggernaut with 4.63 goals per game this season. Don’t expect the Habs to provide much resistance.

Montreal Canadiens vs. Florida Panthers Betting Trends:

  • 5-2 overall in their previous seven games versus the Atlantic Division
  • OVER is 9-3-1 in their previous 13 games
  • OVER is 7-3 in their previous ten games as an underdog
  • OVER is 5-1 in thier previous six games on the road
  • OVER is 6-0 in their previous six games on a Tuesday
  • 7-1 in their previous eight games versus the Atlantic Division
  • 40-11 overall in their previous 51 games at home
  • OVER is 22-6-2 in their previous 30 games versus the Eastern Conference
  • OVER is 20-5-2 in their previous 27 games on one-day rest
  • OVER is 4-1 in their previous five games versus the Canadiens at home

At least the Canadiens have been scoring efficiently enough recently. They’ve scored 3.2 goals per game in their last ten attempts.

The problem is the Canadiens probably need more versus the Panthers’ offense tonight. The Panthers should take advantage of a Montreal team hemorrhaging goals.

On the road, it doesn’t get better for the Canadiens. They’ve allowed nearly 4 goals per game as a visitor.

Good luck to the Habs, as the Panthers have been on fire with 4.63 goals per game at home this season.

Florida has scored at least 4 goals versus the Canadiens in their last three meetings. Last week, they beat the Habs in Montreal in a 4-3 victory.

I’m going with the OVER in what should be a high-scoring final score in Sunrise between the Canadiens and Panthers.
