New York Rangers vs. Winnipeg Jets NHL Pick March 6

The New York Rangers will look to continue their surprising playoff push on Sunday afternoon as they head into Winnipeg to take on the struggling Jets.

With both squads clearly headed in opposite directions, it’ll be interesting to see if that trend continues, as the Jets get increasingly desperate in their bid to make it to the post-season. Though Paul Maurice resigning had an initial positive impact on Winnipeg, this talented roster has not been inspiring under interim bench boss Dave Lowry. Nik Ehlers has returned up front to a skilled lineup, though the offense has been lagging.

For the Rangers, they continue their rise up the Metropolitan Division, having won 7 of their past 10 contests. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin remains red-hot between the pipes for New York, and has worked himself well into Hart Trophy consideration. Winners of two straight, in a tightly contested division, the Rangers don’t have too much margin for error going forward.

New York Rangers vs. Winnipeg Jets Prediction:

Going 7-3 from their past ten games, New York has put themselves in an enviable position to return to the playoffs this coming May. The Rangers are deep and play at one of the fastest paces in hockey, despite not generating much offense. And though their shot metrics might lag compared to other contenders in the NHL, a rock-solid Igor Shesterkin keeps New York in every game. He’s the main reason for their success in 2021-22, and enters Sunday’s clash in fine form. If the Rangers can add another offensive weapon at the deadline, look out as this team has the potential to scare some teams in the playoffs.

The Jets sit sixth in the Central Division and simply put, must get hot if they want a shot at the post-season. Many believed they would qualify easily, though injuries and inconsistency have plagued this group. It hasn’t helped either that former Vezina winner Connor Hellebuyck hasn’t been all that great this year. The American goalie has been getting shelled of late, and though Winnipeg’s offense is starting to show signs of life once again, the defensive play of the Jets has been abysmal.

Winnipeg gives up 3.02 goals per game, and with an array of replacement-level defenders on their blue-line, it puts coach Dave Lowry in a tough situation nightly. Look for the Rangers’ skill and speed from their top-six to really challenge Winnipeg within their own zone, and apply pressure throughout. Mika Zibanejad and Artemi Panarin form an outstanding pairing, and that duo should be able to put some pucks past Hellebuyck on Sunday night.

While the underlying metrics aren’t necessarily kind to either group, with Shesterkin confirmed for Sunday evening, getting the Rangers at any underdog price almost seems too good to be true. With a 1.96 GAA and a stellar .940 save percentage, the big Russian goalie is putting up dominant numbers, and despite recent health to Winnipeg’s forward corps, the Rangers’ defense can keep them to the outside.

Rangers vs. Jets Trends To Know:

  • Rangers are 8-2 in their last 10 Sunday games.
  • Rangers are 7-3 in their last 10 overall.
  • Jets are 2-5 in their last 7 overall.
  • Jets are 6-21 in their last 27 vs. Metropolitan.
  • Under is 6-2 in Rangers last 8 overall.
  • Road team is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings between these teams.

Betting against Igor Shesterkin seems like a sure-fire way to lose money.  While him starting again today might have been unexpected, the young netminder has proven he can handle the workload.  The Rags enter with a decisive goaltending advantage, and while they may not carry the shots and possession advantage, their elite finishers should tilt the balance toward them at a nice underdog price.
