NHL Heritage Classic Picks and Betting Line

The NHL has its second outdoor game of the 2011 season going tonight with the Heritage Classic game between the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames.  The Heritage Classic is being played at McMahon Stadium in Calgary and the game time is set for 6:00 PM EST.

Montreal comes into today sitting in 6th place in the Eastern Conference 9 points ahead of 9th place Buffalo who also plays today.  The Canadiens are 31-21-7 on the year and 4-4-2 in their last 10 games.  Carey Price will get the nod in goal for Montreal, and is wearing a new mask for the Heritage Classic.  Price is 27-19-6 on the year with a .920 SV %.

Calgary has been on a tear as of late as they battle for a Western Conference playoff spot in the NHL’s tightest playoff race in league history.  The Flames sit in 9th place due to tie-breakers right now with their 30-22-8 record and 68 points.  Over the last 10 games the Flames are 7-1-2 and have a 17-9-3 home record this year.  Kiprusoff will be between the pipes and has a 26-19-4 record on the season with a .903 SV %.

2011 Heritage Classic Picks and Predictions:

These outdoor games are very hard to predict as the play is a lot different than normal but I will do my best with a pick for the money line and the over/under as well.

Money Line Pick: These two teams met back in January with Montreal taking a 5-4 OT win.  Montreal has been having a lot of injury problems lately, especially on the backend, but will get a boost from the return of a couple injured players for tonight’s Heritage Classic.  The Canadiens have lost 5 of their last 6 games.  The Flames are 6-1 in their last 7 games as a favorite, and 6-2 in their last 8 home games.  Also note that the Flames have won 10 of their last 13 games overall.  The Flames are playing great hockey lately, and are in need of wins in order to make a push for the playoffs.  I think the Flames get a boost from the 40,000 fans expected at McMahon Stadium today, and get things done on their “home ice”.

Over/Under Pick: This is always the toughest prediction to make in an outdoor game.  The ice will be choppy and the puck seems to bounce quite a bit.  The Habs seem to be playing the Under all season and the UNDER is 5-2-2 in their last 9 games, as well as 35-15-4 in their last 54 road games dating back to last season.  On the other hand the Flames are playing the Over more recently.  The OVER is 5-0 in the Flames last 5 overall and 4-1 in their last 5 home games.  The OVER is also 8-2-1 in the Flames last 11 vs a team with a winning record.  I think the goalies will have a big advantage tonight as it is hard to get quality scoring chances in these outdoor games.  Take the UNDER here tonight in the 2011 Heritage Classic.
