NHL Picks and Predictions for April 14th (Playoffs)

A 3-1 night to start the playoffs is just about all you can ask for. We had the Penguins on the money line, the under in the TB/PIT game, and the Preds in the late game. Our only loss came when the Red Wings and Pavel Datsyuk beat the Phoenix Coyotes. A great 1st night of playoff action and we continue on to tonight’s board. With 3 games on the NHL slate, we have 3 selections for you.

Tonight’s NHL Picks:

Montreal Canadiens vs. Boston Bruins

What a series this one will be. These original six teams have a rivalry and a history as long as anyone can recall. Past playoff series have added fuel to the fire but this year it appeared to begin to burn out of control. To know what we can expect you can look at the fight filled night in Boston, the Chara hit, or even just the hard battles fought each time these teams have met. Boston will look to come out with intensity and exert their physical dominance over the Habs tonight. Montreal on the other hand will look to take advantage of the Bruins in skilled situations and more specifically the power play. The Habs took 4 of 6 from the Bruins and Montreal holds a 24-8 advantage in the past 32 series between the two clubs. Look for this game to be an excellent one with great goals, terrific saves and big hits. The crowd will be rocking to start but I feel the Habs will employ a defensive system that will quiet the crowd down. Coach Jacques Martin is one of the NHL’s best defensive coaches and knows how to keep his players in a system. We are going to go with the Habs in a close 1-goal game.

PICK = Montreal Canadiens (+168)

Los Angeles Kings vs. San Jose Sharks

Let the California battle begin. These two Pacific Division rivals will start their playoff series tonight in San Jose. In a series most are picking to be done very quickly (me included), the Los Angelas Kings don’t mind being the underdogs. The loss of Anze Kopitar really hurts the Kings, but it also forces the team to play a style more apt for the playoffs, defensive. The two teams splits the season series each winning 2 at home and then 1 on the road. The Sharks did win the most recent game at home (April 4th) by a 6-1 blowout. The 3 keys to this series will be 1. Kings goaltending – Quick will have to stand on his head all series. 2. Where will the Kings scoring come from? 3. Can the Sharks finally do what is expected of them in the playoffs?

In my opinion the 3rd key will be the one that comes true. I just can’t see the kings containing Marleau, Thorton, Heatley, Couture, Pavelski, Clowe and Setoguchi. On the odd chance they are able to contain all those guys, I don’t know who is going to score for them. The Sharks also should get solid goaltending from the man who led the Chicago Blackhawks to a Stanley Cup Championship last year in Antti Niemi. All aboard the Sharks bandwagon because I feel they will be taking us to some money tonight.

PICKS = San Jose -1.5 (+167) and San Jose on the Money line (-190) as well.

Good luck to everyone tonight and we will be back with more winners tomorrow.
Stephen
