NHL Picks and Predictions for March 10th

A 1-1 record last night to take our 6 day total to 10-4. I thought we had both games in the bag but Columbus blew a huge lead to the Blues. We press on to a night featuring 7 games with 6 of them being conference matchups. I spent much of last night studying for the next few nights of hockey. Let’s take 3 out of 3 tonight!

Tonight’s NHL Picks:

Philadelphia Flyers vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

The Flyers invade the city of Toronto tonight to do battle with the Leafs. Tonight Toronto will be playing as a desperate team following their OT loss to the Islanders on Tuesday. The Leafs sit 4 points back of the Sabres and Hurricanes, who are both tied for 8th with 72 points. The Leafs have been doing their best of late to stay in the race going 5-1-4 over their last 10. The problem is that picking up only 1 point in the 4 games does not cut it when the teams ahead of you are winning. Philadelphia on the other hand has seen their Eastern conference lead shrink to 4 points thanks to a 4-5-1 record over the last 10 games. The Flyers have 4 teams all within 4 points of them and will be a determined bunch tonight. The series this year has seen Philly take 2 of 3 from the Leafs, including the only game played in Toronto. The Flyers are 4-1 in their last 5 games vs. the Toronto and I look for them to continue this trend tonight. Look for Jeff Carter to continue to play well following a battle with the flu. Philly’s players will have plenty of friends and family supporting them, and I think they will hand the Leafs a devastating loss tonight.

Montreal Canadiens vs. St Louis Blues

St. Louis pulled out a couple comeback wins on Columbus in their home and home matchup. Columbus led St Louis 3-1 on Monday only to fall 5-4 in a shootout. Then last night St Louis stormed back from a 3 goal deficit to beat the Blue Jackets 4-3 in OT. They may have exasperated plenty of energy battling to comeback though. Things will not get any easier for the Blues as they face a Montreal team entering tonight’s tilt as winners of 5 straight and 6 of their past 7. The Habs cruised past Boston on Tuesday with a 4-1 victory that never seemed in question. The only question mark surrounding the game was Zdeno Chara’s hit on Max Pacioretty. An injury such as Pacioretty’s will only bring a strong Habs team closer. Teams tend to rally together to support their fallen brother when something like this occurs. The Habs get to play against Jaroslav Halak tonight for the first time since being traded, but I don’t think they will mind. It appears Montreal made the correct decision on which goalie to keep last summer as Carey Price leads the league in wins and is tied for 2nd for shutouts. Price has won 5 out of his last 6 starts allowing only 8 goals over those games. Look for Price to be excellent and lead the Habs to another low scoring victory.
