NHL Picks and Predictions for March 14th

I hope everyone enjoyed some excellent hockey this weekend. We start a new week tonight with only 3 games on the NHL slate. Though the number of games may be smaller than usual, be sure to tune into a marquee matchup between San Jose and Chicago. These are two of the hottest teams in the league and figures to have a playoff feel to the game. Without further ado let’s break two games down tonight and get some winners.

Tonight’s NHL Picks:

San Jose Sharks vs. Chicago Blackhawks

7-1-2 is the type of record playoff teams love to have over their past 10 games. Both Chicago and San Jose have posted this record in their past 10 games thanks to excellent play from their stars. Tonight the two battle for positioning in the standings as San Jose sits in 3rd and Chicago clings to the 7th spot. With less than 10 points separating 3rd from 11th in the West, every night the standings are shuffling. Chicago played yesterday in Washington in a very entertaining game against the Caps. The Blackhawks tied it up very late thanks to a Toews goal, only to succumb to the Caps in overtime 4-3. San Jose has had their fair share of games going to the extra frame as of late, with 6 of their last 8 games going past the normal 60 minutes. Tonight the Sharks will be looking for the season sweep of the Blackhawks and I don’t know how they are an underdog. They have managed to post a 10-1 record in their last 11 as an underdog though so I don’t think they will mind. Look for Antti Neimi to show the Blackhawks once again that they made the wrong decision letting him go this past summer after winning a Stanley Cup.

PICK = San Jose Sharks (+111)

Minnesota Wild vs. Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks look more and more like the team who might be the first to bring a Stanley Cup to Canada since 1993 every time I watch them. They played an excellent road game in Calgary on Saturday and won the game 4-3. That makes them winners of 5 in a row and 6 out of their last 7. Hot play is exactly what the Canucks will need to keep up heading into the playoffs as an 8 seed can knock off a 1 seed (Saw that last year when the Habs beat the Caps). Minnesota on the other hand just wants to get into the playoffs. The Wild currently sit in 11th but are only 4 points behind 8th place Calgary. The season series has seen the two teams split the 4 games, though the Canucks did win the only game played in Vancouver. Two solid trends that stood out to me in this game involve the total and where the game is being played. The under has cashed in Vancouver’s last 5 homes games and has also cashed in 5 out of the Wilds last 6 games overall. In terms of this series the home team is 7-1 and I do not see this changing tonight. Look for another win by the home team and the under trend to continue tonight.

PICKS = Vancouver Canucks (-200) and the under (-140) (*note – I don’t do this often but will parlay the Canucks and under together)

Good luck to our Picks tonight and let’s start this week off right.
Stephen
