The Edmonton Oilers get back out on the road after an eight-game homestand in Edmonton. Their first stop on the road is in California, not for vacation, but for a business meeting with the Ducks of Anaheim. The Oilers are riding a four-game winning streak heading into Anaheim and looking to gather a head of steam going into the playoffs.
Barring a major collapse of epic proportions, the Oilers will be playing in the postseason at an attempt to get back to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 2005-06.
A lot has changed in Edmonton in ten years. After several years of not getting very far, the Oilers got a significant boost when the 1st overall selection fell into their laps, which they used to draft Connor McDavid. Taylor Hall and Nail Yakupov were supposed to be the faces of the franchise for years to come, but Yakupov was a bust, and Hall never developed into a franchise player.
All of that changed with Connor McDavid. He’s among the top players in the NHL in only his second season as a professional. Yes, McDavid is the best player to hit Edmonton since Wayne Gretzky. The only difference being, I think anyway, is that the Oilers are going to make sure he doesn’t get away to another team.
The Oilers will play visitors to the Ducks tonight, who are looking to make bread with Randy Carlyle behind the bench. Carlyle was here when the Ducks won it all in 2007, but failed as the bench boss of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It led to his dismissal, and some years later he found his way back to California to coach the Ducks. They’ll have their hands full tonight with trying to contain McDavid. Let’s see how they bode. Edmonton Oilers vs. Anaheim Ducks Pick
We cashed the Oilers a few nights ago against the Kings. It was a rather easy win, as the Kings never stood a chance. It’s about time that teams started paying attention to the Oilers and I think they have. I don’t think the Oilers, nor the Leafs, two newcomers to the playoff fold are going to be teams to overlook.
The Oilers are 39-24-4 and have played consistent, solid hockey all season long. There were many who thought they were going to drop off following their red hot to the year, but it hasn’t been the case.
The Ducks are coming off a nice 2-1 win on the road against the Sharks. They’re pretty well even with the Oilers, as they have 38 wins to the Oilers’ 39. So, yes, this game could very well have an impact on playoff seeding at the end of the regular season. I faded the Kings against the Oilers the other night, because I believed that they were going to be flat in their first game on the road in weeks.
This is the same case with the Oilers, who were last on the road on February 28th. I expect a weary Oilers team on the ice tonight, playing against the Ducks who can get it done at home. Anaheim enter with a record of 23-8-2 at home. It wasn’t a successful pick for us last night, losing a hard one in overtime on the Rangers. I’m confident we can bring a winning pick to the plate tonight in Anaheim, though.
PICK: DUCKS (-120)
