The Nashville Predators got a signature win last night over the Washington Capitals and today they get back out on the ice. It was their biggest win of the season, with hopes it carries over into the rest of the year. The Predators need all of the wins they can the next couple of months. They are currently 30-22-9 and hanging on to a playoff position. However, there is little to no room separating several teams in the Western Conference, a lot of which, is going to come down to the last two or three days of the regular season.
For our NHL pick today, we’re zeroing-in on the Edmonton Oilers and Predators this evening. The Oilers will be playing their fifth consecutive game on the road today. They’ve already made stops in Chicago, Tampa Bay, Florida, and Washington. The Oilers came close to beating the Capitals, and put up a solid effort, but in the end, they fell by a score of 2-1. The Oilers are 2-2 on their road trip heading into Nashville. They have victories over the Blackhawks and Panthers, with losses against the Lightning and Capitals.
Their attention will turn to the Oilers tonight following the monumental win last night. It wasn’t just a win, the Predators thoroughly controlled the game, winning it 5-2. The Preds definitely needed that game to give them some more confidence. If we want to be real though, if the Capitals brought forth a better effort they would have won that game. If this were a series, the Caps would be heavy favorites. It just looked like they weren’t interested last night. In any event, let’s give the Predators credit for seizing the opportunity. We’ll see if they can duplicate it against the Oilers. Let’s get to the pick.
Edmonton Oilers vs. Nashville Predators Pick
The Oilers would be ecstatic with a few wins on this road trip. A win today against the Predators would give them their third win. It was a tough loss falling to the Capitals, a game they played quite hard. The Predators were able to do what the Oilers couldn’t last night. The Caps aren’t going to sweat it, nor should the Oilers, who are still in a great position. Edmonton enter 33-21-4 and can control their playoff destiny. The Oilers are ahead of schedule in the rebuilding department, so they should be happy about where they are.
The Oilers have improved on both fronts this season, offensively and defensively. They are 12th in goals per game, with 2.79 goals per game, and 7th with 2.53 goals allowed per game. The defence, in particular, has been impressive, and that’s why they are looking at the playoffs right now. The defence has been better and the goaltending under Cam Talbot has been exceptionally better as well.
Talbot owns a GAA of 2.36, along with a save percentage of 0.921 percent. What I see happening is the Predators sleepwalking through this game after they beat the Capitals. They’re out celebrating, forgetting that they have a game to play against the Oilers the next day. Edmonton looks like some decent value in Nashville tonight. I like the Oilers for our Oilers vs. Predators pick.
