Last night the St. Louis Blues had a battle on their hands with the Carolina Hurricanes. One of the worst offenses in the NHL lit the Blues up for 4 goals. The game went to overtime with the Blues ultimately winning it in a shootout. Unfortunately they didn’t cover -1.5 so you had to have the ML to come out a winner in that game. The Canes scoring barrage certainly comes as a surprise against the Blues who have one of the better defenses in the NHL. The Blues had to get into a shootout with the Hurricanes to pick up the win. Additionally, the Hurricanes are the worst road team in the NHL, but put up a pretty good effort against the Blues. Goaltender Brian Elliot got yanked, however, it wasn’t enough for St. Louis. At the end of the night they pick up 2 points and I am left scratching my head with what just transpired.
Not much NHL action to choose from today. The eyes of everyone will be on the NFL playoffs instead of NHL hockey today. But when football is done after the Colts and Broncos conclude, there will be some hockey to watch for the serious sports fan. What that means is more opportunities for money to be won. I have a 4 UNIT bet at http://NFLBettingPicks.org along with Kevin’s plays for tomorrow, and I’ll be looking to make cash in this game tonight. The game I chose for our Sunday pick is between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers.
Florida Panthers @ Edmonton Oilers
The Florida Panthers are one of the best neglected teams in the NHL. When I said neglected I mean the amount of attention they receive. They aren’t an excellent team, but they are definitely good and should demand at least a little bit of attention. These are the Panthers after all and play in Florida, so I do understand that much, but from a betting perspective, and the rest of the league, should not take them lightly. The Panthers enter tonight 19-11-4-5 and haven’t played bad hockey this year at all. Much of this is largely in part because of goaltender Roberto Luongo. Luongo has a GAA of 2.22 which ranks among the best in the NHL. Backup Montoya got hit hard for 6 goals in the Panthers last game, but we expect Luongo to be back between the pipes against the Oilers. Florida has gone 3-1 on this road trip thus far, with their only loss coming against a hot Washington Capitals team.
The Oilers have been hot lately. Okay, retract that last statement. The Oilers have been hot for their own standards or in relation to the rest of their dismal season. They won two of their last three games after winning only one game in twelve attempts. In their last fifteen games the Oilers have gone 3-15, with two of those wins coming in the last three games. I think after beating the Blackhawks in the Oilers last matchup, they aren’t going to take the Panthers too seriously tonight. The Oilers are 27th in goals for, netting 2.24 goals per game. Conversely, they are 29th in goals against. The only team worse than them in that department are the Sabres. The price in this game is cheap on the Panthers in this game. Note that the Oilers have won five straight games over the Panthers, so that leads credence to why we are getting a good number on them. Even though the Oilers have played them hard in the past, I believe their streak comes to an end. They should find it difficult to facilitate offense against Luongo and the defense. I will be playing the Panthers on a money-line price I really like against the Edmonton Oilers.
