Panthers vs. Red Wings Pick – NHL February 8th

After the NFL year concluded last night with Super Bowl 50, we turn our attention to the court and ice until baseball season. The Super Bowl was less than suspenseful and entertaining, but I did say that it was going to be an ugly low scoring game. What happened was just that. We ended up cashing in some wagers and made out on top, so that that is all that matters. However, after watching that game, I feel like I do after watching a movie with a terrible ending. I’m not going to complain with the winnings in the Super Bowl and from this entire season. I finished the NFL with a record of 52-43 ATS and on totals. Yet another profitable season. I hope you join us next season as I look again to turn in a money making campaign. But for now, there is still a lot of action to look at elsewhere and baseball season is quickly approaching in April. Let’s look at making some coin on the ice tonight. A lot of people want to take a break after the Super Bowl and if you feel like you need definitely go for it. If you don’t need it and want to keep on plowing ahead, we have you covered. Tonight it’s back to the NHL, as we head to Hockeytown in Detroit for the Panthers and Red Wings.

This is a rematch of a recent meeting between the Florida Panthers and Detroit Red Wings. The winged wheels got taken good by the Panthers in the Florida in the first round. It was a fairly equal matchup, but the difference there was that the Panthers had Roberto Luongo in net and the Wings had to deal with Jimmy Howard. Howard has been trending down big time after a few years as a reliable option for the Red Wings between the pipes. It was looking like Howard was going to go on to have a few more quality years with the Red Wings. But he has been regressing backwards and his ineffectiveness has given way to the very talented Petr Mrazek. Howard holds a 2.89 GAA and 7-8 record, while Mrazek has a record of 19-10 and a 2.03 GAA. Undoubtedly, I find Mrazek to be the most underrated goaltenders in the NHL. The Wings have a couple players who aren’t household names now, but may be in a couple years. Let’s get to our NHL pick, fresh off a good day with the Super Bowl yesterday.

Florida Panthers vs. Detroit Red Wings NHL Pick

The other Red Wing that you have to keep tabs on is Dylan Larkin. Larkin is a hometown product who grew up in Michigan. He also played at the University of Michigan for his collegiate career. The Red Wings and Team USA have a good one on their hands. He and Mrazek should prove to be the face of the franchise after Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk move on. Zetterberg is 35 years old and Datsyuk is 37 so there time is coming. Larkin is the young age of 19, born in only 1996 and already playing at an elite level in the NHL. It doesn’t look like we will have to wait very long until the torch is passed to Larkin, though. He owns 18 goals and 19 assists with a terrific +/- of 25. The Wings drafted well by nabbing Zetterberg and Datsyuk, now they hit another gem.

The Panthers owned the Wings in their matchup on February 4th, a 6-3 final score. The Panthers were up quick, getting out to a 3-0 lead. The Panthers have made out well with the acquisition of Roberto Luongo. Luongo began his career in Florida and it will likely end here. He has posted a 2.13 GAA with a 23-13 record for the Panthers, leading the way to a 31-15-5 record. The Panthers were on a roll, winning five in a row before being defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime. This one looks like a close low scoring battle to me. Luongo and Mrazek should steal the spotlight. Florida is 1st in the NHL, allowing only 2.21 goals per game. Conversely, the Wings are 11th in that same regard, but they would be higher if Mrazek was given more starts. I like the UNDER.

PICK: UNDER 5 GOALS (-110)
