The Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks headline the Wednesday night card, which only has two games on the docket. Elsewhere in the NHL, the Carolina Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Lightning battle in a less intriguing affair. The Lightning appear to be having a fire sale, getting started by sending Dan Boyle to the Leafs. With the Hurricanes at .500, there really isn’t much to report from Tampa.
However, it’s a different story in this meeting between the Penguins and Blackhawks. The Pens have two Stanley Cups since 2009, and the Blackhawks have won three, their latest coming in the spring of 2015. There are plenty of championships to go around for the Penguins and Blackhawks of late.
We’ll look for another successful pick tonight in a marquee matchup, following an easy win for us on the Washington Capitals. They trailed 1-0 but made it look easy after they tied it up, going on to beat the Rangers by a score of 4-1.
Let’s go for another big win tonight, and start March out on the right note. Luckily the NCAA Tournament is right around the corner and then baseball will follow. You can’t forget about the NHL Playoffs, either. I want to say the NBA, but I find their playoffs the worst in all of sports until the finals.
The Pens and Hawks will be there in the playoffs, as one will look to defend their crown, while the other is looking to get back on the grandest stage of them all in hockey. You can make a strong argument for both teams here.
The Blackhawks should have an easier path to the Stanley Cup Finals in the Western Conference. I see them as the team to beat. Sorry Minnesota, but you haven’t shown that you can beat them in the playoffs. Look below for our Penguins vs. Blackhawks pick on Wednesday night.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Chicago Blackhawks Pick
The Pens and Blackhawks haven’t met yet this season, their last clash coming back on January 6th of 2016. There the Blackhawks picked up a 3-1 victory. The victories have come quite easily against the Penguins. If there is one team that has had their number in recent years it’s the Blackhawks. Chicago has beaten Pittsburgh four straight times, including a 5-1 record in their last six meetings. Success has been written all over these franchises, so it’s one of the few things the Penguins haven’t been able to do right.
The Penguins enter tonight going 2-2 in their last four games, a little uncharacteristic to see them with only five wins in their last ten attempts. Conversely, the Blackhawks have been hot as heck, winning nine of their last ten games. The Hawks have been a scoring machine during this stretch, averaging 4.40 goals per game in their last ten. In their last four games, the Blackhawks were good for 5 goals a game. Meanwhile, the Penguins are 1st overall in the NHL in the goals department, with 3.46 goals per game. The Blackhawks come in at 7th overall. For our Wednesday night NHL pick, we look for some goals to be scored. Thus, a play on the OVER looks like a good play.
PICK: OVER 5.5 GOALS (-105)
