Penguins vs. Flames Pick – NHL February 6th

The Pittsburgh Penguins are in a peculiar position that we don’t always see with this team. It has been a long time since we’ve talked about the Penguins being an okay to average team, but lately there is no other way to sum the Pens up. They’ve come back from the break looking a little rusty and have been unable to find consistency, for the Penguins standards anyway. They are 4-6 their last ten games. Nevertheless, they still find themselves in a good position with a record of 29-14-4-4 entering tonight against the Calgary Flames. The Flames have found some success this season after a few seasons of tumultuous results in Calgary. Other than the Canadiens, the Flames may be the best team in Canada. This is thanks to a recent run by the Flames that has put them in a position that garners a 29-20-2-1 record. The Flames are 8-2 in their last ten games. Try finding such a nice run in the Flames favor in recent years, you aren’t going to find it. They look for a marquee victory tonight against the Penguins who are their for the taking, as Pittsburgh looks for momentum .

I got the Red Wings at +100 two days ago for last nights game. I said they should have been -115 favorites instead of +100 that the odds makers were making a mistake. Sure enough the odds closed as the Red Wings at -116. I am sure there was a big influx of money on the Red Wings coming in with the opening price, and I am sure the odds makers realized they were probably off on their original assumption. No matter what the odds were you got it at, the bet was all money in the end. We look for more tonight, in a game that I think the numbers are off a little bit again.

Pittsburgh Penguins @ Calgary Flames

I understand where the sportsbooks are coming with in this game. After all the Flames are the hot team and the Penguins have been playing lackluster hockey lately. However, if we look deeper, there are some things that point in the Penguins direction. Firstly, lets take a look at the offenses of both teams, which are pretty even. The Penguins are averaging 2.84 goals per game, but that is a big downgrade from where they were over a month ago. 2.84 goals a game makes them 12th in the NHL in scoring. Who is just ahead of them? The Flames who are producing at a scoring clip of 2.86 goals a game. They are just about even, but note the Flames have been the better team lately.

Defensively we don’t see much separation as well. The Penguins are, however, just ahead of the Flames in this category. The Pens enter allowing 2.45 goals per game for 9th in the NHL. Who is right behind them? None other than the Flames who are 10th in the league in goals against. So, with all of that considered, -116 on the Penguins does make sense, these teams appear even statistically. However, Pittsburgh has had their way with the Flames the past few seasons. Note that the Penguins have won eight straight times over Calgary, and are 4-0 their last four trips to play there. I think the Penguins string together a couple of wins in a row on this west-coast trip. Look for the Penguins to come out victorious and show despite the statistics, they are the much better team.

PICK – PENGUINS TO WIN -116 ( Best Odds)
