Penguins vs. Islanders Pick – NHL January 16th

A pretty exciting matchup for Friday night, as the Pittsburgh Penguins travel to New York for a meeting with the Islanders. The Islanders have been the breakthrough team of 2014-2015 and are looking to stake their claim deeper into the NHL even more with a win over the Pens tonight. It wouldn’t be the first time the Islanders were able to do that this season. In fact, it wouldn’t be the second either. The Isles have had the Penguins number this season, dropping them in two straight games on back-to-back nights in November. Those two games definitely proved the worth of the Islanders as legitimate contenders in the NHL. They still may hit a rough patch before this season is over with, but it is safe to assume by this point that it isn’t a fluke the Isles are 29-13-0-1, 1st in the Metropolitan. The Penguins are right behind the Islanders with a 26-10-3-3 record so this is an important game for both teams. Really the only thing that separates them is those games they played back in November. Tonight the Penguins will look to return the favor.

Last night was frustrating in a way. The Lightning won the game, 3-2, but weren’t able to get a late goal to cash on the PL. I don’t think I have been on the better end of an empty net this season, which is crazy at this point in the season. By this juncture I have usually found an empty netter to cash -1.5 or an OVER bet. Unfortunately that hasn’t been the way it has gone thus far. Let’s start the weekend off the right way with a winning pick tonight.

Pittsburgh Penguins @ New York Islanders

This price caught my attention when I initially looked at the NHL board, and looking at it now I still like it. I was expecting more of a pick em’ rather than the Isles favored by -125. Is it justified? I mean the Islanders are a damn good team. You don’t get to 29-13-1 by a coincidence. The Penguins I’m sure don’t feel that they should be that big of underdogs against the Isles here, though. I have to agree with that statement. It shouldn’t be that much of a different than the current price, but I think Islanders -110 would have been a more accurate price on the money-line. The Isles are 14-4 at home this season, a terrific accomplishment, but the Penguins are strong on the road, sporting an away record of 10-4-2-2. The Penguins have played great in New York against the Islanders in recent memory, as they are 9-3 playing here in their last twelve meetings.

The Penguins edge the Islanders out in the goal scoring department, coming into tonight as the 4th best team in the NHL with regards to scoring per game. The Islanders come in at 8th in the league in scoring. They’ve had the better of the Penguins in their first two games, and have the better record, but statistically the Penguins are superior to the Islanders. Note the Pens have a tough defensive unit to go with the offense, boasting a goals against average of 2.31 goals per game, 3rd in the NHL. Meanwhile the Islanders are allowing 2.67 goals for 20th in the league. It could happen, but I don’t see the Isles winning this game tonight. All things considered, it would be a tall task for them to beat Sidney Crosby and company three times in a row in the same season. As underdogs Friday night, I like the Pens to take care of the Islanders to inch closer to them in the standings.
