Penguins vs. Senators Game 3 Pick – NHL May 17th

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators meet in Ottawa for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals. The Sens have to be feeling quite alright with themselves going home with a 1-1 tie. They bested the Senators in overtime to take Game 1, and played in Game 2 like they were content heading to Ottawa with a tied series. The Penguins may have won just 1-0 last game, but Pittsburgh put the pressure on the Senators all game long. The net seemed to have a lid on it for the Penguins, as the Senators were able to keep it out of the net somehow.

It really doesn’t matter though, the Pens won 1-0 and the Senators failed to steal another one. If they would have lost that one, it would have been a tough pill to swallow for the Pens. They severely outplayed their opponents but wouldn’t have had a win to show for it. Pittsburgh had 29 shots to the Senators 22, but out of those 29 shots there were a plethora of scoring chances for the Pens. Pittsburgh escaped unscathed, though. The story line of the Eastern Conference Finals has been the superb goaltending. Both Marc-Andre Fleury and Craig Anderson have been fantastic. Anderson is riding an emotional wave since his wife’s diagnosis, and for Fleury, he hit a wave of superior play in net. Without Fleury coming up huge in Game 2, the Penguins would be down 0-2 in this series. Conversely, Anderson came up big in Game 1 to help his team out.

The total was 5.5 in Game 1 and 2. Oddsmakers have since lowered the total to 5 as a result of the goaltending. Let’s be honest here though, the Penguins should have found more than one single goal in Game 2. The Penguins’ offence ranked at the top during the regular season, and continued to put up sizable numbers in the playoffs to reach the Eastern Conference Finals. I tend to think that things are going to open up here and we see a game with chances in front of the net being converted. With a total of 5, I look for the OVER to cash.

PICK: OVER 5 (-115)
