The St. Louis Blues shut the Sabres down the other night, but pummelled them for a score of 6-1 putting the game above the total. It is pretty frustrating not being on the winning side of the Blues -1.5 because it looked too easy, and it ended up being easy money. The Sabres are truly a dumpster fire. Not only does their game against the Blues prove that, but take a look at the odds in the Wild game tonight. The Minnesota Wild are -350 favorites over the Sabres! The Wild are 7-7. They aren’t a powerhouse, nor are they one of the hottest teams in the NHL at the moment. The price is just a testament to how bad the Buffalo Sabres are. The Blues on the other hand are on the upswing, getting a rematch tonight against the Nashville Predators.
If this game looks familiar it’s because it is. Not only did the Preds and Blues play just a few nights ago, but I had a bet locked in on it, a bet that we cashed. It was a fairly predictable affair, with the Predators and Blues playing to a slow defensive tempo. Should that change tonight? Well, I think the winning team is going to change. Expectedly so, the Blues are a fairly big favorite at -160 over the Preds. It would make sense that both teams protect serve at home. I think -160 is still a little too pricy. If it were in the -140 range I would probably take the Blues. However, I don’t seeing the pace of the game changing much, so I see another bet that looks to be a winner.
Nashville Predators @ St. Louis Blues
I went over this in my previous write-up for this game, but if you didn’t read it and or are new to following my NHL picks, I’ll go over it quickly. If there is any team the Predators like playing it is the Blues. It showed with their win over them the other night. They make out much better against that play a similar style to themselves. If they have to go up against a team with speed and finesse, forget about it, the Predators are losing. But if you get them into a low scoring physical type game then they have an opportunity at pulling games out. This style has held them back in my opinion, but it has kept them an average tam. They’ve never had goal scorers and playmakers on their roster, so they need to make do with what they have. The Preds will need to do more work on the offensive end for them to go anywhere, but as it is, the defense will keep them competitive. The Preds’ defense is 5th in the NHL with regards to goals against per game, allowing only 1.93. You’ll find the other top teams in this group among the best in the NHL. However, the Preds have zero goal scoring to complement their defense. They’re scoring 2.47 goals per game, 23rd in the NHL, so therein lies the problem. This would be a team that would be able to do some damage with more offense on it.
We shouldn’t expect Nashville to score many goals against the Blues on the road. If they get to 2 again I would be surprised. While the Predators are 5th defensively, the Blues are allowing a league best 1.87 goals a game. They are quite average on offense, scoring 2.6 goals per game. Expecting a high scoring matchup here would be foolish. Anything can certainly happen, but the information afforded to us says otherwise. The Predators are 12-2 to the UNDER thus far in 2014. We expect another low scoring slugfest tonight against the Blues, so take a look at the UNDER 5 which is at a pretty reasonable price of -110.
