Oh, come on now. The Islanders finally put a donut up on the scoreboard, scoring no goals last night. However, it came in a game where the opposition, the Avalanche, score 5 goals. What that equates to is a kick to the gut, as it was the first time all season the Isles were held to no goals. They were averaging around 4 goals a game entering tonight, but after it was all said and done, the Islanders couldn’t muster up a single goal. One goal would have of course pushed the game OVER the total, as Colorado scored 5. Even more frustrating is the fact that the Islanders put 40 shots on net, ugh. That my friends is a pretty bad beat. I thought after a score of 4-0 heading into the 3rd was going to give us a winning ticket, but the Islanders weren’t able to get anything past Varlamov. That will happen to you betting on hockey on a regular basis, though. One guy can steal the show. This season feels like the start of baseball season for me, winning some and losing some with no consistency. I did, however, make money this MLB season, and look to do that with the NHL as well. Let’s take a look what we have for Friday night in the NHL.
I had a write-up the other night featuring the Boston Bruins and Minnesota Wild, two solid defensive teams. They are strong on defense and are great all-around. The Predators and Flames are not so great as complete teams. Preds and Flames’ games aren’t the most fun or entertaining games. There is a lot of defense, if that is your thing, but other than that a casual NHL fan isn’t going to like watching the Predators and Flames play. Although, if you have been blindly betting the UNDER in their games then you are into some serious cash already this season. Read below to learn some more about this matchup.
Nashville Predators @ Calgary Flames
Like I just said, if you have been betting the UNDER in Predator and Flame games you’ve had major success betting this season. How well would you be doing? Well if you have taken the UNDER in the last eight Calgary games then you would be on an 8-0 run. Moreover, if you’ve been betting it all season, you would be at an 8-2 mark. Conversely, it is more of the same with the Nashville Predators, and believe it or not, it is even more impressive on the Nashville side. The Preds are 8-1 to the UNDER this season. Combined, then, the UNDER is 16-3 between these two teams. That makes for an 84% success rate. 84% is definitely a significant trend. The Predators have been this kind of team for the last decade. They always bring one of the toughest defenses to the NHL, but goals are hard to come by. A coaching change was expected to bring more goals, but it hasn’t exactly panned out that way thus far. Nashville is averaging only 2.44 goals per game, which is 23rd in the NHL. However, as I alluded to, their defense is keeping them afloat, like it always does. They’re allowing only 1.78 goals a game, 1st in the league.
You don’t have to go back very far in either of these categories to find the Calgary Flames. The city of Calgary has been hungry for a winner, but this is a franchise that continues to trend downwards. This was to be expected after they went in full-blown rebuilding mode after long-time leader Jerome Iginla parted ways. The Flames are actually scoring less goals than the Predators are, lighting the red light just 2.36 times a game, 25th in the league. Conversely, the defense has been holding up well, holding opposing teams to only 2 goals per game. I am undoubtedly following numbers and history in this game. Hopefully the numbers hold up for us tonight, and the total falls under the posted total of 5. At +104 this is a great bargain to be had.
