The NHL is back in action and set up with another great night of action on Wednesday night. Five games are up on the board throughout October 13. One of those matchups will be between the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals. These two teams will look for a fast start to this season with a win. This game will drop the puck at around 7:30 PM Eastern time on TNT.
New York is coming off a disappointing season that had them fall short of the playoffs once again. The Rangers continue to develop though and were able to add Barclay Goodrow, Ryan Reaves, Sammy Blais and Patrick Nemeth in the offseason. New York will look for this new and stronger identity to help them bounce back this season. The Rangers will look for a big win to open up this season.
The Capitals had a rough finish to last season as well. Washington ended up in second place of the East Division, but fell to the Boston Bruins in the first round. The Capitals did not move around a lot in the offseason besides losing Brendon Dillon. Washington will look to reestablish themselves as a playoff team with a strong start to this season.
These two teams are coming off solid off seasons and will look for a big win in this one. The Rangers added some strength to go along with their young and talented core. New York has a lot of potential on offense and I think they added some great defenders as well. This game should be an exciting one as last season’s brawl is still fresh in both teams’ minds.

New York Rangers
- 64-65 in all games last two seasons
- 24-21 in road games where total was six or more
- 19-20 in first half of season
- 41-40 against division last two seasons
- 80-58 in all games last two seasons
- 26-20 in home games where total was six or more
- 27-14 in first half of season
- 49-43 against division last two seasons
These two teams met up eight times throughout last season. Both teams went 4-4 throughout the season series. The Rangers dropped the last two games of the season to Washington, which included the big brawl between the two teams. New York will look to bounce back early in this season as they try to prove they are a contender early in this season.

The Rangers were solid on both sides of special teams throughout last season. New York posted a 20.7 percent power play throughout last season, which was 14th in the NHL. The Rangers also earned an 82.3 percent penalty kill, which was 10th in the league.
Washington’s special teams were really strong during last season. The Capitals earned a power play percentage of 24.8 percent, which was 3rd in the league. Washington’s penalty kill killed off 84 percent of the penalties against them, which was 5th in the NHL.
These two teams were solid on special teams throughout last season. New York had a 19.5 percent power play and a penalty kill of 81.6 percent on the road last season. The Capitals posted a power play percentage of 30.6 and an 83.1 percent penalty kill at home a season ago. These two teams will look to control special teams in what I expect will be a chippy game.
Igor Shesterkin will likely get the start in the crease for New York on Wednesday night. Shesterkin went 16-14-3 throughout last season. He earned a save percentage of .916 and a 2.62 GAA in those starts last season. Shesterkin will look to come out hot in this one as he tries to steal a big win for the Rangers on the road.
I expect Ilya Samsonov to get the nod in net for the Capitals in this one. Samsonov finished last season with a record of 13-4-1 throughout his starts. He put up a .902 save percentage and a GAA of 2.69 in those matchups though. Samsonov missed the beginning of last season though and will look to turn in a full campaign this time around.
These two goalies are still very young, but have a lot of promise going into this season. Shesterkin put up the better numbers a season ago, while Samsonov had the better record on the year. These two goalies will look to set the tone with a big win in this matchup. If either goalie can come out hot in this one, I think it will be enough for the win.
New York is coming off a good offseason and I expect their young stars to take strides this season. If players like Alexis Lafreniere can make the next stride, I expect a strong season from the Rangers. I think New York will come out hot in this one to open up the season. If Shesterkin can control the game early, I think the Rangers will get a little revenge for last season.
BetOnline has Washington listed as a -124 against the money line in this one. This implies that the Capitals will win this game around 55.4 percent of the time. I think that this line is accurate with Washington being at home, but I think it could be closer to even. With New York coming in with a new identity this season, I really like the value on them as underdogs in this one.
