Rangers vs. Capitals Pick – NHL April 5th

With only two games on the NHL schedule tonight, there isn’t much going on. I have one circled though, which should make for an entertaining game. In who are considered favorites in the Eastern Conference, we get a preview of what could be a playoff series in just a few weeks’ time.

The Capitals are playing a back-to-back, after they demolished the Maple Leafs in Toronto last night. That could be yet another playoff preview, if the seeding works out with the Leafs getting the final wildcard. I don’t expect much from the Maple Leafs if they have to face the Caps.

The Rangers will give it another go at the Stanley Cup this year, as they enter Wednesday night with a record of 47-26-6, they’ve locked their spot in for the postseason. The Rangers need to get a solid performance out of Henrik Lundqvist.

It’s really simple, but I feel it’s going to come down to which Lundqvist shows up. The Rangers can’t get into 5-4 and 6-3 type of games. The defence will have to help their offence out. For so long, it was the opposite, with the defence and Henrik carrying the load. We’ll see if everything can come together for the Rangers, as the window is closing on Henrik’s chances to win a Cup. Let’s get to our Rangers vs. Capitals pick in the NHL.

N.Y. Rangers vs. Washington Capitals Pick

The Capitals cruised last night, making quick work of the Leafs in a 4-1 victory. They have nothing to play for at this point, with the President’s Trophy and 1st overall seed wrapped up. At this juncture, the name of the game is staying healthy for the postseason.

Don’t tell that to the Capitals though, after playing at full-speed a night ago against the Maple Leafs. It is certainly important to stay hot, and I’m sure Barry Trotz is hammering home the point of not laying off the gas pedal.

The Caps are 2nd in the NHL, averaging 3.24 goals per game. Through their last ten games, they’ve scored just over 3.50 goals per game. Conversely, the defence has been rearing its ugly head for the Rangers again, as they have given up an average of 3.10 goals in their last ten outings.

They averaged around 3 goals, but in the playoffs they aren’t going to get too far with a defence allowing more than 3 goals per game. In their last four games, the Rangers have surrendered a whopping 18 goals. That’s not going to get the job done. In what should make for a good game, I like the total amount of goals scored to go OVER the posted total of 5.5. Our Wednesday night NHL pick in Washington is on the OVER 5.5 between the Rangers and Capitals.

PICK: OVER 5.5 (-110)
