Rangers vs. Penguins NHL Pick – December 5th

The New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins meet on Tuesday night, as both teams have shaken off sluggish starts to look like contenders recently. The Pens are coming off four straight wins, the latest coming against the Buffalo Sabres, 5-1, on Saturday Night. Conversely, the Rangers have won four of their last six, taking down the Hurricanes in their last outing on Friday night.

The Rangers and Pens have had some rest to prepare for this one so there should be some fresh legs on the ice tonight. the Penguins will have to compete with their starting goaltender again tonight. Matt Murray was placed on IR with a lower-body injury, leaving the starting job to Tristan Jarry. Jarry has done an excellent job replacing Murray. With a record of 4-0-2, there doesn’t appear to be any reason to rush Murray back.

Jarry and the Pens will have a challenge tonight against an offense who is beginning to turn it up. The Rangers enter with a record of 14-10-1. It looked a whole lot uglier in the season. They started out with just 1 win in their first eight games. An ugly mark for a team who is better than that record suggested. They’ve been able to warm up, though, as they’ve flipped their season around.

They went on a six-game winning streak to give their offence some confidence, and they’ve continued to produce. They have lost just three games in their last fourteen contests, scoring at least 4 goals in nine of those matchups. This is a crucial stretch of games for the Rangers. Note that their next three games features teams all ahead of them in the Metropolitan.

If they want to continue to play catch up from their opening month falters, this would be a good time to keep it rolling. The Pens enter at 15-10-2, including 6-3-1 in their last ten. Sidney Crosby has had a hot-hand, as he’s notched 9 points in his the last ten games and goals in five straight. We’ll see who stays hot and who cools off tonight. N.Y. Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Pick

Crosby is a player who can get awfully streaky hot. If he gets on a run, it’s really difficult to bump him off the pedestal. These kind of ten game runs when he can’t be stopped isn’t anything new for who has been one of the best players in the NHL over the last decade. When he’s rolling, the rest of the offence is rolling as well. The Penguins have scored 3.7 goals per game in their last ten games, and 4.75 per game in their last four contests. Malkin usually feeds off Crosby when he’s hot and it was certainly the case against the Sabres. Malkin scored a goal and had an assist in a 5-1 effort for the Penguins.

The Rangers have scored 3.4 goals per game over their last ten. They’ve scored at least 4 goals in their last three games, and netted 4.2 goals per game in their last five. The Rangers are going to need some goals tonight. Pittsburgh has torched a hole in their net in this series. In their last four meetings, the Pens have scored 6 goals per game. Lundqvist has also been inconsistent on the road this season, with a 3.13 GAA.

That isn’t all his fault, the defence has struggled overall when they’re on the road. As a team, the Rangers have allowed 3.75 goals per game on the road. In their last seven meetings, there has been an average of 7.5 goals scored per game overall. The OVER has gone 6-1-1 in their last eight meetings, and 5-0-1 in their last six in Pittsburgh. Jarry has played well in relief, but I can see his numbers taking a bit of a hit against the hot Rangers’ offence. This game should provide must-watch action on Tuesday night. I’d take a look at the OVER between the Rangers and Penguins in the NHL tonight.

PICK: OVER 6 (-110)
