There are a lot of teams in the NHL that have gotten off to excellent starts, and then conversely there are teams that have gotten off to poor starts. Which one do you think the New York Rangers fall under? That is the easiest question I believe you will have today. Of course the Rangers are off to an excellent start. You wouldn’t have even needed to watch much hockey this season to know the Rangers are a very good hockey team, but in this era, the Henrik Lundqvist era, the Rangers have had nothing to show up for it in way of a Stanley Cup. A lot of success, but not enough to be Stanley Cup champions. They are off to a 12-2-1 season in New York and are looking like favorites again in 2015-16. Not to say it’s going to translate into winning the whole thing, though. I have no evidence to suggest that anything will change in the playoffs this season, but maybe they prove us all wrong, because I’m sure enough people are fed up picking the Rangers to win the Cup, only to feel stupid for picking them again and again, then they lose and lose when it matters most.
The Rangers latest win was a 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues. That made it seven straight wins in a row for the Rangers, including 9-1 of their last ten games. In other words, if you have been putting your money on the Rangers all season long, you would be having a very profitable season. If you’ve been putting your money on the Rangers to win the Stanley Cup the last few seasons, then there has been some money lost, needless to say. The Rangers have had great regular seasons, but I don’t quite remember them starting a year out like this. We are going to see tonight if they can continue the momentum against the Ottawa Senators.
N.Y. Rangers vs. Ottawa Senators Pick
There isn’t a goaltender in the NHL that is reliable as Henrik Lundqvist has been for the Rangers. He is the definition of consistency. It’s just the rest of the team has to help him out in the playoffs. The way he’s been playing this season though, he doesn’t need much help. Note that the Rangers have allowed only 1.69 goals per game. 1.69 ranks 1st in the NHL in total defense. Not only is Henrik a great goalie, but the Rangers as a whole are great throughout. There is a perception that the Rangers are only about defense, and while I noted that in former years, the Rangers have found some offense to go along with that stellar defense this season. They are 4th in the NHL in goal scoring with 3.19 goals scored per game.
Not bad at all, 1st in defense and 4th and scoring. What happens because of that is a 12-2-1 record. The Senators are going to have to work on the defense, as they are all the way back in 26th in defense, where they are allowing 3.06 goals per game. In their last ten games they have allowed 3.30 goals, compared to the Rangers who have allowed 1.20 goals per game in the same capacity. I think you have to ride the hot hand here and take a look with the Rangers over the Sens in Ottawa. Too much value for me in this spot.
