No play from me last night, but I am back with a pick and writeup tonight. I’m on shortened time, so this is going to be a shorter review than normally. Tonight ill take a look at the Red Wings vs. the Maple Leafs, a back-to-back series in Toronto and Detroit. After a clash tonight at the ACC they’ll make the short trip back down south to Detroit where they will meet again. A lot of rematches early in the season between teams, but this is one that makes sense, and I actually like. With the region from Detroit to Toronto predominantly ruled by Wings and Leafs fans, it is nice that they meet twice in two days. Let’s get to the pick.
Detroit Red Wings @ Toronto Maple Leafs
The weakness of the Leafs may be washed out by the weakness of the Wings in this game. The Leafs continue to make defensive gaffs on a regular basis this season, and for that matter, the last few seasons, but the question is if Detroit will be able to take advantage of it. It is a little weird saying that the Red Wings aren’t a team with firepower. However, with no Pavel Datsyuk due to injury, and the offensive prowess of the team sliding the past few years, the Wings really have had an identity change. They are going to be in plenty of 2-1, 3-2 kind of games this year. Toronto on the other hand will be looking to get into a run and gun shootout with their offensive mindset. The Leafs are averaging 3.5 goals per game, but are also allowing 3.5 a game. That pretty much sums them up in a nutshell. While early season production isn’t always wise to predict the future, I feel like lots of goals surrendered and scored will be the storyline of their season. Conversely, the Wings have the opposite problem. They are equal in production on the goal scoring and goals against as well, albeit both are lower. Detroit is allowing only 2 goals a game, but are scoring only 2 per game. I think that offense wins out tonight, and the Leafs win this one at home. It is quite plausible that we get a split in this series with both teams holding serve at home.
