The Detroit Red Wings will be in NYC on Wednesday night as the attempt to stop the bleeding. For a period, it looked like the Wings were well on their way to ending it, but then the bleeding started again and didn’t stop until the Predators left Detroit with a 6-1 win. Yikes is right. The Predators scored 5 goals in the 2nd period to put away the Red Wings fairly easily.
Jimmy Howard was pulled out of the net and replaced with Jonathan Bernier after allowing 4 goals on 15 shots. It’s the second straight game that Howard had to be removed from the game because of a poor effort. He was yanked after surrendering 5 goals on 21 shots against the Hurricanes in Raleigh on Friday.
Howard had to deal with deflections against the Predators. All of the goals weren’t his fault, but it’s been a recurring theme for him this season. He looks spent and not excited to be out there playing for a losing team at all. The Red Wings have had ample opportunities to work out a trade for Howard in the past, but obviously never pulled the trigger. They could have stuck with Petr Mrazek and traded Howard instead. However, Mrazek was traded to the Flyers, and is currently enjoying some success in Raleigh with the Canes.
Having said that, there is plenty of young talented on the Wings. All of their top contributors are 25 years old or younger, and in the NHL today, you need younger legs to find success. Darren Helm is the grandfather of the team at 32. While the Wings are young, Jeff Blashill just isn’t getting the most out of his club. They should be playing better hockey at this point. It’s no surprise that rumors of Blashill’s demise are ramping up in Detroit. His players are defending him, but it might not help convince Steve Yzerman.
Speaking of underperforming teams, the New York Rangers have been doing a good job of that. There was a lot of hype going into this season with the acquisition of Artemi Panarin in the summer. The same issues in NYC persist, though. They’re going into Wednesday night with a record of 5-6-1 and there hasn’t been much consistency. The Rangers are coming off a lousy performance in a 6-2 loss against the Senators. That makes for a combined loss of 12-3 between the Red Wings and Rangers in their most recent action. Head below for our free Red Wings vs. Rangers pick.
Detroit Red Wings vs. N.Y. Rangers Pick
The Red Wings are not expected to amount to much this season. They were hoping to see progress, but the playoffs were a reach. With respects to the Rangers, they didn’t sign Panarin and expect to just show small signs of progress this season. Panarin is expected to elevate them into being a playoff team again. While Panarin has been fine with 12 points on the year, the bad defence has been a consistent theme for the Rangers yet again in 2019-20.
Fortunately, though, the Rangers won’t have to deal with an offence who can ring up the scoreboard. And after that performance against the Sens, I can see them putting forth a much better effort. The Red Wings are struggling mightily to score the puck, with just 2.13 goals per game for dead last in the NHL. It’s been the same on the road, where the Wings have scored 2.13 goals per game as a visitor.
And no, the defence hasn’t been able to compensate for the offensive shortcomings. The Wings are 30th in the league with 3.94 goals against per game. On the road, they’ve yielded 4.13 goals per contest. In their previous ten outings, the Wings have won just a single game against the Oilers. It includes just 1.7 goals logged per game and 4.2 goals against. Their defensive issues may improve when Mike Green and Danny DeKeyser return, but they will be unavailable again tonight.
There is clearly pressure on the Red Wings to get out of this hole and find success in New York. However, I’d argue there’s even more pressure on the Rangers in this spot. They are the team expected to win this season, and after getting blown out by the lowly Senators, back-to-back losses vs non-playoff teams would be an embarrassing look for the Rangers. If they don’t come out and stomp on the Wings, fans are going to be hitting the panic switch to the ON position in NYC. I don’t think that happens, though, and they should be able to get back on track against the dysfunctional Red Wings at MSG in this Original Six battle Wednesday night.
