Sabres vs. Kings Pick – NHL October 23rd

A small card yesterday and I didn’t feel like forcing anything, so I made it a no play. Some nights a no play is the best kind of play you can make. My last play was an easy winning pick on the Leafs/Islanders OVER 5.5. If you pick your spots with OVERs on Islander games then you’re going to make more money than lose. Another way you can make money this season is by fading the Buffalo Sabres. Goodness this is a bad hockey team. Like I said before, if an aging Brian Gionta is the best player on your team, then you don’t have a good team. Read below for my Thursday night writeup.

Buffalo Sabres @ L.A. Kings

I thought a -340 ML on the Kings was going to make for a pretty high price in the Kings -1.5 as well. But what we have is a pretty decent price on a bet that I think is worth a little more. The worst team in the NHL, the Sabres, will travel across country to face the reigning Stanley Cup Champion, Los Angeles Kings. Buffalo has started the year off 1-5, and it is by no mistake here, they are a very bad team. There is no help upfront or on the back end defensively. Their only win was 4-3 in a shootout against the Carolina Hurricanes, another rather bad team. After that victory the Sabres have been held goalless in their last two games, a 4-0 loss to the Bruins and 1-0 to the Panthers. The Sabres are averaging only 1.17 goals and allowing 3.67. They are also putting only 23.8 shots on net per game, while allowing 38! No goals and no defense makes for one garbage team as a whole. Note that I am writing this just as the Ducks/Sabres get started, so I can’t comment on last night. However, they have it tough playing the Ducks then Kings on back-to-back nights. I expect sluggish legs for sure.

If you can’t score any goals against the Florida Panthers, just forget about it against the Kings. L.A. is giving up only 1.67 goals per game. Consequently, the worst offense in the NHL will be playing the best defense. I really don’t know how the Sabres will be able to score more than a goal. There is always the chance of funny bounces and the like, but I see that as the only way the Sabres have any success here. Or maybe the Kings were out partying until 7am and could care less about this game. Even then, the Kings should be able to win this game. With -1.5 on the Kings at only -110 I like this bet.

Pick – L.A. Kings -1.5 (-110) @ (Best Odds)
