What is there to make of the Ottawa Senators and Dallas Stars. In a lot of ways these teams tell the same story. They both have records that are nearly identical to one another, the Sens at 17-16-4-4 and the Stars are 18-16-6-1. Both the Senators and Stars have also had their moments this season. And then, conversely, on the other end of the spectrum they go on spurts where they look like a couple of the worst teams in the NHL. These two inconsistent combatants will take the ice tonight in Dallas, which will give one team a much needed victory, and the other another loss only adding to the misery of a stretch of bad fortunes. The Senators have lost six of their last ten games, while the Stars have lost four straight games. Before losing four in a row, the Stars won four in a row. That is exactly what I mean. Win and then taketh away in a blink of an eye. The Stars have an offense that can be exciting at times, but their defense really takes away any hope of them being a competitive team in the NHL. Tyler Seguin is doing a fine job this season, notching 26 goals and 22 assists, but again, there needs to be some additions to the blue line in the coming years for them to be a good team.
I am writing this pick earlier than I wanted to so I can’t provide a follow-up of last night. In any case, I hope everyone had an enjoyable Monday night and won some money from the college football National Championship and the NHL last night. My only play in the NFL for the weekend was a team total on the Broncos. It looked good for the first five minutes, but Peyton Manning was looking more like Kyle Orton than Manning in that game against the Colts. Although, a healthy Orton probably would have given them a better chance than what Manning was serving up on Sunday. To the NHL we go tonight. Jump below for the free pick.
Ottawa Senators @ Dallas Stars
As I mentioned already these are two of the most inconsistent teams you will come across in the NHL. If there is one thing the Stars are consistent at doing is allowing plenty of goals. Even if the Stars are winning games, they usually come in a high scoring fashion. If the offense is clicking it is difficult to slow down. Note that in the four game win streak the Stars scored a total of 20 goals. That averages out to 5 goals per game. In their next game against the Blackhawks they lost, but scored another 4 goals while allowing 5. During their four game losing streak opposing teams scored an average of 4 goals on them. So here you see it is either all or nothing with the Stars. It is a safe bet though that goals will be scored in a game featuring Dallas.
The Stars are all or nothing, the Sens are neither here nor there. They have a fairly vanilla team that is not exceptionally good at one thing or the other. They score an average of 2.61 goals per game, good for 19th in the NHL. On defense they allow 2.66 goals a game, which ranks again 19th in the league. I think the type of game the Sens play in, either high scoring or a defensive battle, depends on the style of the team they’re playing. Compared to Dallas who is great on offense, 5th in the NHL, but porous on defense, 28th. I see the Stars pushing the Sens into a high scoring game and as such I like the OVER 5.5.
