It wasn’t the best start of the day for the Red Wings on Tuesday. Downtown Detroit had a blackout Tuesday morning so they were forced to practice in the dark. For the greater part of their game against the Florida Panthers they looked like they were still playing in the dark. The Wings jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st, but they have up 4 straight unanswered goals before making a game of it in the 3rd, 4-3 final for the Panthers. Now that the offense has come around for the Wings, it’s like the defense has decided to sit back and enjoy the show. Most of the goals that the Wings conceded were a result of slop in their own zone. Giveaways and dumb plays around the net don’t usually add up to good things. I felt like I was watching the Leafs play for a minute there. They look to bounce back tonight in Detroit, as they welcome the Dallas Stars to the Joe Louis Arena.
I am going right back to Detroit tonight for my Thursday night pick. Their opponent, the Dallas Stars, have a few exciting pieces on their team, including Tyler Seguin. The former Bruin has enjoyed considerable success in Dallas and perhaps has grown up a little since his time in Boston. It isn’t a bad situation for Seguin by playing in a market with less pressure on him to perform. Nevertheless, the Stars still have a long way to go before they can attract fans to their arena like the Bruins do. At 9-11-4-1 they are an average NHL team, but the Stars do play in some watchable games, if you like scoring that is. It feels as if either they’re scoring lots of goals or their opponent is. In their last game, they played to a 5-3 loss to the Maple Leafs, easily flying over the posted total of 6. Read below for the pick.
Dallas Stars @ Detroit Red Wings
The Stars have been getting torched defensively lately it goes without saying. In their last three games, the Stars have given up 5 goals in each. If we look a little further back, the Stars have given up 5 or more goals in five of their last eight matchups. In back-to-back games they allowed 6 goals in each game to the Blackhawks and Hurricanes. They are among the worst teams in the league defensively, allowing an average of 3.52 goals per game. The Stars should face troubles against this Red Wings’ offense that has been ripping holes in the twine of late.
The Red Wings will look to keep their offensive prowess up thanks to Datsyuk’s return. Against the Stars’ defense, there are no indications that they should slow the goal scoring down. In their last five games the Wings have averaged 4.4 goals a game. 7 out of their last 10 games have resulted in 4 or more goals being scored. However, while they’ve been scoring, the Wings have been giving up some goals as well lately. In those five games they also surrendered 3.2 goals per game. The Panthers, who have been lifeless on offense, woke up and scored 4 goals on them. I look for the Wings to put together a big night on offense against this defense. The Wings are 5-0 to the OVER in their last five and the Stars are 3-0 their last three. The Stars should combine with the Wings to make for a high scoring game in Detroit tonight, so it makes for a play on the OVER 5.5.
