Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Columbus Blue Jackets NHL Pick March 7

Another embarrassing loss for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday evening won’t do much to calm the doubts and fears of an on-edge Leafs Nation, especially with a visit to an upstart Blue Jackets team looming.

The Leafs lost a couple of weeks ago to these same Blue Jackets in overtime off a Patrik Laine goal, and with the state of the Leafs’ goaltending, and Columbus’ recent high-octane offense, it could be yet another recipe for disaster for Sheldon Keefe and the Leafs.

Toronto’s goaltending has been among the worst in the league since December 1st, 2021 all but washing away all the goodwill Jack Campbell built up early in the season. The All-Star has entirely lost his form, and as a result expect the equally struggling Petr Mrazek to be between the pipes vs. the Jackets. Ondrej Kase and Rasmus Sandin remain out for the struggling Buds.

Columbus meanwhile continues to play some surprisingly good hockey, and are proving to be a tough out for any opponent. They can score at will of late, and winger Patrik Laine enters Monday night as one of the best scorers in hockey right now. The Jackets rode a deep scoring attack to an impressive 4-3 victory over these same Leafs on Feb. 22nd, and this young, upstart group hasn’t given up on the post-season just yet. Look for Elvis Merzlikins to be in goal for CBJ, and though he hasn’t had the best of seasons, he’s historically been a thorn in the side for the Leafs.

Can Toronto shake off their recent woes and continue their push atop a tight Atlantic division? Or will the Blue Jackets continue their surge and again play the role of a pesky spoiler? Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Prediction:

The big concern for the Jackets entering Monday evening has to be the status of their fading penalty kill. While the Leafs enter near the top of the league on the power play, this is a group that has struggled with the man advantage for nearly two weeks now. We saw last year how ice-cold this unit can get in Toronto, and some bad habits look to once again be seeping into their games.

Columbus will counter with size, physicality, and scoring touch up front. Boone Jenner and Patrik Laine have been dominant in recent weeks, and their offense enters as the hottest in the league. That’s a huge mismatch against a Leafs’ blue-line that simply cannot defend off the rush, and a goaltending tandem that hasn’t been stopping much in weeks. While Toronto remains near the top of the league in shot metrics and possession, it truly won’t matter until either Mrazek or Jack Campbell can give this team a consistent save.

As a result, Toronto has needed to outscore their issues for some time now, and it’s simply an unsustainable approach to winning hockey games. Their defense is beat-up and soft, while their goaltending continues to cost them points. Yes, the Toronto attack remains elite and should find offense against Columbus, but the Jackets’ Merzlikins holds a much bigger advantage over Mrazek. Look for them to be able to take full advantage of this.

Maple Leafs vs. Blue Jackets Trends To Know:

  • Maple Leafs are 1-4 in their last 5 after allowing 5 goals or more in their previous game.
  • Blue Jackets are 6-1 in their last 7 games playing on 1 days rest.
  • Blue Jackets are 5-1 in their last 6 vs. Atlantic.
  • Blue Jackets are 7-0 in their last 7 when their opponent allows 5 goals or more in their previous game.
  • Over is 4-0-1 in Maple Leafs last 5 games as a road favorite.
  • Over is 6-2-2 in the last 10 meetings in Columbus.

The trends don’t favour the Leafs and nor does the recent run of play.  The Jackets remain somewhat in the hunt for a playoff spot, and as the healthier and hungrier team, this betting line at open seems highly inflated.  Toronto simply can’t get a save right now, and until bettors see this team keep pucks out, it’s impossibly tough to lay a massive number with them as road favourites.  Take the value and back Columbus to secure another big victory on Monday evening.
