The Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets are scheduled to battle at Nationwide Arena on Thursday night. On Tuesday, Washington is coming off a 4-3 win in a shootout over the New York Islanders.
This win followed a 4-3 win in overtime against the Vancouver Canucks four days earlier at Rogers Arena. Alexander Ovechkin passed Jaromir Jagr for third on the all-time goal list with No. 767.

He and the Capitals are hot recently with wins in five of their last six attempts. Their only loss was a 4-3 loss in OT versus the Oilers on March 9. Right now they are a dangerous team going into Thursday night.
In other words, the Capitals have at least a point in every game since a 5-3 loss to Toronto on February 28. They were lackadaisical for the season’s opening stretch, but waking up as of late.
The Capitals caught fire at the right time when they went all of the way to win a Stanley Cup in 2018, so maybe this is a repeat. This is still a capable team, as they head into Columbus at 33-18-10 with 76 points.
It’s a very tough and competitive Metropolitan Division, though. All that’s getting the Capitals is fourth-place and 21 points behind the division-leading Carolina Hurricanes.
The Blue Jackets are playing good hockey recently as well. They have won three straight and coming off a 4-1 win over the Ottawa Senators.
Columbus needed this run in the worst way possible. Prior to this winning streak, the Blue Jackets had lost four in a row and six of their previous seven attempts.
They are going into tonight at 31-27-3 and 65 points for an 11-point deficit behind the Capitals. Head below for our free Capitals vs. Blue Jackets prediction on March 17, 2022.

Capitals vs. Blue Jackets Prediction:
The Blue Jackets need to get more physical defensively if they’re beating the Capitals tonight. They’ve been allowing teams to skate in and generate too many Grade A scoring chances.
The goaltending could be better, sure, but there aren’t any goalies in the NHL that would like to play with this defense. Columbus is dead last in the league with 35.5 shots against per game.
This has led to way too many opportunities for the opposition. The Blue Jackets have allowed 3.62 goals per game for 30th in the NHL.
They’ve given up 3.6 goals a game in their last ten attempts, so at least they’re being consistent? The Jackets have been better at home, but not enough to be effective with 3.47 goals conceded.
Joonas Korpisalo is listed as probable on a back-to-back. Elvis Merzlikins showed up nicely with 30 saves on 31 shots in Ottawa last night.
Korpisalo has been worse than Merzlikins, as he has a 3.95 GAA and a 0.883 save percentage. I’m not sure what’s changed for Korpisalo in two years, but he has to be on the verge of losing his job if this continues next year.
Washington Capitals vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Betting Trends:
- 5-1 overall in their previous six games
- 7-3 overall in their previous ten games on the road
- OVER is 5-0 in their previous five games
- OVER is 5-2 in their previous seven games as a betting favorite
- OVER is 18-7-1 in their previous 26 games after a win
- 5-2 overall in their previous seven games after a win
- 4-11 overall in their previous 15 games on a back-to-back
- OVER is 9-2 in their previous 11 games on a back-to-back
- OVER is 19-5-2 in their previous 26 games after a win
- OVER is 9-1-1 in their previous 11 games after conceding 2 or fewer goals in their previous game
Washington has sprung to life offensively with at least 4 goals in five of their previous six games. The Capitals have notched 3 goals in seven straight outings.
They seem to be alive and well at the moment. Washington has scored 3.40 goals per game through their previous ten outings while allowing 3 goals a game.
For all of the Blue Jackets’ faults on defense, the offense has been entertaining to watch. They press instead of sitting back like teams of old in Columbus.
The Jackets are in the top-10 with 3.3 goals per game and 3.44 goals in the net per game at home in Columbus. This doesn’t fix one of the worst defenses in the NHL, though, and it hasn’t gotten any better recently with 3.6 goals allowed in their last ten outings.
This should be a good one in Ohio. The Capitals and Blue Jackets should do it if you are looking for an entertaining game with plenty of goals.
