Michigan State Spartans vs. Purdue Boilermakers Pick – NCAAB January 29, 2023

The Michigan State Spartans and Purdue Boilermakers meet early this afternoon at Mackay Arena in West Lafayette on CBS.

It is Championship Sunday in the NFL, with a big college basketball matchup leading us into the NFC Championship Game. We have our latest Michigan State vs. Purdue best bets and predictions in the Big Ten on Sunday.

Tip-off is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. EST at Purdue University. The Boilermakers are looking to maintain their No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25. With No. 2 Alabama losing and No. 3 Houston struggling at home against Cincinnati, Purdue is the clear No. 1 choice if they win.

Purdue is going into this one off a 75-70 win at Michigan on Thursday night. The win was good for their seventh straight victory and 20th of the season. They are perfect except for a 65-64 loss at home versus Rutgers on January 2.

The Boilermakers are on a seven-game winning streak going into this spot. Tennessee and Kansas State were the only teams on Saturday that look like they belong with Purdue. They both looked good in double-digit wins.

Michigan State is going into Indiana with a record of 14-7. The Spartans are coming off a 63-61 win at home versus the Iowa Hawkeyes. They won the game, but missed out on covering by a half-point.

In their latest trip on the road, Michigan State came up well short in an 82-69 loss as 4.5-point underdogs in Bloomington last weekend. With wins in two of their previous five outings, Michigan State has to be better.

Michigan State vs. Purdue Predictions

The Boilermakers and Spartans meet for the second time this season. Michigan State gave Purdue everything they could handle on January 16 in East Lansing. However, it wasn’t enough in a 64-63 win for the Boilermakers.

Despite the loss, Michigan State was able to cover the 4-point spread. They’ve been a tough team to beat at home. Michigan State owns a record of 9-2 in 11 games at Breslin.

However, the Spartans are just 2-3 in five games on the road. It wasn’t their best attempt in the last two showings. Michigan State lost at Illinois, 75-66, and the failure at Indiana, 82-69.

Michigan State Needs Plan To Stop Edey

If Michigan State had some help from somebody other than Tyson Walker they win that game. Walker went off for 30 points, but he was the only Spartan to score more than 14 points.

The bench was pretty well useless, while center Mady Sissoko was worked by Zach Edey. Sissoko put up a donut with 0 points. Edey bullied Sissoko in the paint for 32 points.

The star center also collected 17 rebounds against the Spartans. Stopping Edey with Sissoko is unlikely to happen. They require a different approach on Sunday afternoon.

Attention diverted to Edey should free up the guards to be more effective this time. Ethan Morton scored no points, while Braden Smith contributed with just 4 points. If either of those two played well, Purdue would have made it look a lot easier than a 1-point win.

Can Malik Hall Be The Difference?

The 6’8” forward was unavailable for Michigan State against Purdue earlier this season. He has missed 11 games because of a nagging foot injury. Hall returned with 11 points and 3 rebounds in 25 minutes on Thursday against Iowa.

The big man has averaged 10 points on 52.2% shooting in 2022-23. Michigan State hopes that Hall can contribute enough to bother Edey, but there isn’t a guy on this roster that will limit Edey.

Overall, Michigan State is 239th in the NCAA with 69.3 points scored per game. Their production regresses on the road, with 64.6 points per game on 43.8% shooting. The Spartans have to deal with a top-10 defense allowing 60.3 points per game this season.

Michigan State vs. Purdue Betting Pick

Purdue is not my favorite team in the country. They are No. 1, but far from perfect. At 73.6 points per game, the Boilermakers are 143rd in the nation.

The Boilermakers lack pop from deep, where they are shooting just 32.9% from three. However, Edey should be too much in the paint on the offensive and defensive floor. His presence should make Hall’s return irrelevant.

Purdue is tough to score on at home. They have conceded 58 points per game and a 39.9% field goal percentage. The Spartans do not have the firepower to put a dent in the Boilermakers on the road.

For our Michigan State vs. Purdue prediction, we are looking at a 76-65 win for the Boilermakers.
