USC Trojans vs. Utah Utes Pick – NCAA Football Week 7

The USC Trojans and Utah Utes matchup in Salt Lake City is highlighted on our shortlist of best bets in Week 7 this weekend. The USC football team is on the road for a showdown with the Utes at Rice-Eccles Stadium. TheSportsGeek has our best USC vs. Utah prediction and betting pick for Saturday.

At first look, USC appears like an auto-bet getting 3.5 points considering Utah’s form, but let’s look deeper into this matchup.

Utah already has two losses in their portfolio and are down nine spots in the AP Top 25 after last week. They are on the heels of a disappointing performance at UCLA in a 42-32 loss. That’s not Utah football giving up 42 points.

It was only last year that Utah won the Pac-12 Championship against the Oregon Ducks. Much of that championship team is still together, so head coach Kyle Wittingham is left wondering what’s going on with his team.

Utah has it tough in the Pac-12 this season. UCLA, Oregon, and USC are all unbeaten in conference play. The Utes have the talent to make a run, but they can’t slip up much more, especially against USC on Saturday night.

USC enters Salt Lake City perfect at 6-0. There is plenty of hype in Southern California.

The Trojans are College Football Playoff hopefuls, but they’re another team we aren’t sure if they are for real yet. USC has been a favorite in every game this season, with their toughest opponent a road game against Oregon State.

USC vs. Utah Prediction

The Trojans are going to be an attractive bet to the public against Utah. However, are they as good as their record indicates? USC has been sharp, but they need a test.

In their most difficult matchup so far, the Trojans didn’t cover on the road at Oregon State. USC was able to hold on for a 17-14 win, but weren’t at their best.

USC covered on the road at Stanford on September 10, but the Cardinal have been bad and a 41-28 win doesn’t move the meter.

Beating Utah wouldn’t do much for the public, but this would be a big win on the road in Salt Lake City. USC may not be as good as their record shows, while Utah could be better than their 4-2 record.

Former Sooners Comfortable In Southern California

Head coach Lincoln Riley and quarterback Caleb Williams both dipped on Oklahoma at the same time. As soon as Riley marked his departure, Williams announced that he was leaving for USC, as well.

They haven’t lost at USC and the offense has looked solid with Williams at the controls. Williams has passed for 1,590 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 1 interception on 64.9% passing. He’s also scampered for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground.

Williams is in the mix as one of the favorites to win the Heisman, but let’s get past Utah first. The numbers are Heisman-worthy, but the Trojans have enjoyed an easy schedule so far this season.

Utah were throttled against Dorian Thompson-Robinson at the Rose Bowl last week. DTR racked up 4 touchdowns through the air and an additional score on the ground. Williams is a similar quarterback, so we’ll see if Utah learned anything.

The Utah Defense Should Respond

The public isn’t going to be high on the Utes’ defense after what happened last week. They have a good offense coming to town and Utah just got KO’d. However, I’m confident in Whittingham having his defense back in good form.

Utah is 22nd in the nation with 316 yards allowed per game. The Utes have also given up an average of 19 points per game for 30th. Despite the poor showing in California, Utah still holds strong numbers going into Saturday. They have been good against the pass, with 179.3 passing yards yielded per contest.

USC vs. Utah Betting Pick:

The Utes are back at home in a stadium they’ve had a lot of success. Utah has covered all three games at home this season and 4-0 against the spread in their previous four attempts.

Note that Utah gets up for these big matchups at home, too. The Utes have covered four straight games at home vs a team with a record better than .500. They are also 4-1 ATS over USC in the Trojans last five trips here.

Cameron Rising is a better quarterback than advertised and should steal the limelight from Williams. Rising has thrown 13 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on 69% completions through six games. He’s also running for 7 yards per carry on the ground.

Fade the public and avoid the trap of USC. Ride with Utah at home. Our top USC vs. Utah betting pick is on the Utes to win and cover -3.5 points.
