Welcome to my EPL Draw value soccer picks, where I’ll be looking to exploit the bookies with value plays for our readers. The next pick features a possible early relegation clash between struggling Southampton and Newcastle United with both teams near the foot of the Premier League— Kickoff: 1000hrs (EST)
Southampton secured a solid point away at south coast rivals, Bournemouth, last weekend in a 0-0 draw at the Vitality Stadium but this result extended Southampton’s run without a win in the Premier League to five matches.
Saturday afternoon’s hosts find themselves once again in familiar territory down near the foot of the English top flight, having registered just one win so far this season. That rare success was a 2-0 win away at Crystal Palace but it should be noted that Palace were without their star player, Wilfred Zaha for that clash.
In addition, Southampton have failed to hit the back of the net in each of their last four matches which must be a growing concern for manager Mark Hughes as he looks to lift his side away from the bottom three today.
Home Form & Team News
The Saints also are still yet to record a home win at their St Mary’s Stadium this term having drawn twice and lost twice – and with just one league win from their last 15 matches on home turf, the hosts possess an extremely poor record in front of their home crowd.
Southampton’s record this season stands at an uninspiring 0-2-2 3/7 which includes draws with Burnley 0-0 and Brighton 2-2 along with defeats to Leicester City 2-1 and Chelsea 3-0.
Mark Hughes’s only injury concern is whether midfielder Mario Lemina recovers from a knock last week against Brighton but if he doesn’t make it, Oriol Romeu is likely to deputise. Forward Shane Long may replace Charlie Austin up front.
If Southampton’s situation is in the balance, then Newcastle United are in decidedly choppy waters as the visitors sit bottom of the Premier League with just two points to their name after the first nine matches of the top flight season.
Along with second from bottom outfit Huddersfield Town, Newcastle are the only other side in the league yet to record a win so far this term and recent results suggest that The Magpies aren’t about to turn a corner anytime soon.
Newcastle have lost six of their last seven matches overall and have managed to scrape just a single point from the last possible 21 on offer, so manager Rafa Benitez is under increasing pressure to turn things around for his side.
Away Form & Team News
Just two goals separates Southampton’s home record to that of Newcastle’s away record which stands at 0-2-2 3/5 but there is a glimmer of hope for the visitors as they make their way down to the south coast for this important encounter.
The Magpies have grabbed points away at Cardiff City and Crystal Palace respectively both in 0-0 stalemates so far, and may just fancy their chances of walking away with a point against an out of form Southampton outfit here.
Rafa Benitez is hoping forward Salomon Rondon is available this week while leading goalscorer, Joselu (2 goals) may replace Yoshinori Muto up front this time. Defenders, Florian Lejeune and Jamie Sterry remain sidelined while Ciaran Clark is doubtful.
This clash features two teams that are both woefully out of form and is expected to be a dour, nervy affair at St Mary’s Stadium. I wouldn’t be surprised if this ended up a 0-0 stalemate here.
