The English Premier League has two games on the schedule on Thursday. In the early match, Aston Villa hosts Burnley at Villa Park, while Manchester United heads on the road for a scheduled contest against Sheffield United. Manchester United always catches the most attention, so Aston Villa and Burnley will play in the shadows of the late night match in England.
It was an entertaining meeting between Liverpool and Tottenham on Wednesday, as the top-2 clubs in the Champion League clashed at Anfield. Liverpool escaped with all three points thanks to a late Roberto Firmino goal at the 90th minute. Tottenham just had to hold on a little longer and they would have earned a big point on the road.
Despite Liverpool playing with a banged up roster, they rode the hot wave at Anfield for another home victory. It will be some kind of moment when a team actually wins at Anfield. It’s going to happen eventually, though Liverpool has shown no intentions of losing at home again. Liverpool sits atop the EPL table alone with a record of 8-4-1 and 28 points now. Their defence of the EPL title is off to a good start.
Burnley recorded a much needed win on Sunday in a stunning upset over Arsenal. Despite being outplayed, Burnley shocked Arsenal with a 1-0 win at Emirates Stadium. Burnley hadn’t shown much signs of life prior to that match, but at least have one marquee win to put on their resume.
That was only the second win for Burnley this season, as they carry a record of 2-3-6 and 9 points into Villa Park. Take any opponent lightly and upsets are always possible. That’s what happened to Arsenal, but I’m sure they will learn from it. Conversely, Aston Villa are coming off a 1-0 win over Wolves on the road. Head below for our free Aston Villa vs. Burnley pick for December 17, 2020.
Aston Villa vs. Burnley Premier League Betting Odds:
Aston Villa vs. Burnley Prediction:
If Burnley brings the same energy to the pitch as they did against Arsenal, they can score another upset on Thursday. I should add that is’ going to also require a letdown for Aston Villa. A letdown in the sense that they do the same act that Arsenal did and don’t take Burnley seriously. Aston Villa are certainly the more talented club, but we’ll see if Burnley picked up some momentum thanks to their big win over Arsenal. In any event, if the season were to end today, then Burnley would be getting relegated.
There are only two clubs in the EPL that have played worse than Burnley. Burnley has recorded 2-3-6 and 9 points, while West Brom has 7 points, and Sheffield United has been terrible with just 1-point. All three clubs are going to be facing relegation. Burnley has recorded an abysmal goal differential of -12. They have scored 0.55 goals and conceded 1.64 goals per match. Their defence has been leaky, to say the least, on the road with an average of 2 goals conceded per match.
Aston Villa can score at a rapid pace, and that’s what concerns me about Burnley on the road today. They’ve been scoring with ease at home, having scored an average of 2.4 goals per match at home. Aston Villa played Burnley in their last meeting on the road in January. It was a textbook 2-1 win for Aston. Burnley managed just 1 shot on target, while Aston secured 6 shots on target, with a couple of them finding the back of the net. After Burnley defeated Arsenal, I can see this being a big letdown spot for them in another trip on the road. Expect a clean victory for Aston Villa here by a goal or two at Villa Stadium on Thursday.
