The Serie A schedule continues on Wednesday with a full slate of action throughout the day. There are six matches on tap, including Atalanta welcoming Sampdoria to Gewiss Stadium. Atalanta are comfortably situated in the top-4 ahead of AC Milan. AC Milan have been coming on hard recently, but they’re 14 points back of Atalanta and not much of a threat to play catch up.
Give credit to Milan, though, they’ve been coming on strong with wins over Lazio, and they beat Juventus in another upset on Tuesday. Juventus were on fire before Zlatan and company cooled them off. It was a come from behind win for AC Milan, with Juve taking a 2-0 lead at the 53rd minute mark on a Ronaldo goal.
Lazio botched a glorious opportunity to get right back into the thick of the race with Juventus. They had a very winnable match against Lecce in front of them, but lost 2-1 in a major upset. It’s not crazy to see Milan beating Juventus, but Lazio losing against Lecce is a bit yikes. With a win for Lazio, they would have cut Juve’s lead down to 4 points. However, Lazio remains 7 points behind Juve.
If Lavio ultimately finishes within 3 points of Juventus for the Serie A title, we can look back on yesterday as one of the main reasons for why Lazio aren’t celebrating. Atalanta isn’t catching the top spot in Serie A, but they look like a sure bet to go to the Champions League. The way I see it, that’s a good thing for UEFA. Atalanta may not be good enough to be champions, but they’re one of the more entertaining clubs in Europe.
Atalanta don’t stop attacking, and while they tend to get too eager on the offensive end and prone to a counter-attack, their matches can be fun to watch. If you don’t like watching keepaway football for 1-0 matches, then Atalanta should be a club that is on your must-watch list. They enter Wednesday with a record of 19-6-5 and 63 points. 9-5-16 Sampdoria, who enter in good form, will be looking for an upset on the road in this one. Atalanta vs. Sampdoria Serie A Betting Odds:
Atalanta vs. Sampdoria Prediction:
Sampdoria are well aware that they’re going to need to be aware defensively against Atalanta on Wednesday. They know that offensive pressure is coming, though most clubs don’t know how to handle it. In any event, Sampdoria have been in the zone recently and may have an upset in their plans if they can catch Atalanta sleeping.
Sampdoria are coming off wins against SPAL, 3-0, and Lecce, 2-1. Those aren’t the most difficult opponents, but since returning from the shutdown, Sampdoria has been competitive in all of their matches. They have 2-1 losses against Inter Milan, Roma, and Bologna. Sampdoria was hanging around and made it a game. They might be able to do the same on Wednesday, but Atalanta is a whole different challenge.
Atalanta are on a nine-match winning streak in Serie A competition. Their uptempo offence often causes serious issues for the opposition. Three of the top-10 scorers in Serie A belong with Atalanta. Josip Ilicic, Luis Muriel, and Duvan Zapata have all recorded at least 14 goals for Atalanta in the 2019-20 campaign. Alejandro Gomez leads Serie A with 15 assists on his resume.
They are first in goals by a significant margin. Atalanta has netted 83 goals, with the next closest club is Lazio with 66 goals. That’s good for 2.77 goals per match in Serie A. At home, they’ve been slightly better with 2.8 goals netted per match. Simply put, Atalanta aren’t competing for a Serie A title because of their defence. They’ve conceded 1.3 goals per match, and it goes up to 1.47 goals per match at home. Atalanta may get just a bit too aggressive at Gewiss Stadium, and it translates to counter-attack opportunities for their opponents.
Sampdoria had nothing going for their offence early in the season, but they’ve stopped playing back and are pressing a bit more now. In their previous two matches they have scored a total of 4 goals, and at least a goal in every match since returning to play in June. However, with 1.93 goals conceded per match on the road, it’s within reason to expect Atalanta exploiting their defence. I envision a 3-1 or 3-2 win for Atalanta on Wednesday night in Italy.
