Atletico Madrid and Mallorca are at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Friday for Matchday No. 34. It is the only La Liga match of the day, with most of the attention already getting diverted on Sunday to the Real Madrid match against Athletic Bilbao. Real Madrid can deliver a killshot to Barcelona if they pick up another 3 points.
Barca are on the road to play Villarreal, which is setting up to be a near must-win situation. Real Madrid are up in the table with a record of 22-8-3 and 74 points. Barca are second with a mark of 21-7-5 and 70 points. With five matches left for both sides, a win for Real and loss or tie for Barca would be a season changer.
Something has looked off for Barca since returning to the pitch following the lockdown. They haven’t looked interested and just look a step too slow. That has to do with their average age being up there. A layoff for older legs like on Barca can’t have helped anything. They just have to stay focused and realize they’re still in the race, though. That said, I will say that a draw against Celta Vigo and Atletico Madrid did nothing to instill much confidence in their supporters.
Atletico Madrid are a good club, so that wasn’t overly surprising to see. However, a draw against Celta Vigo was a missed opportunity for what should have been 3 points. All they had to do is go out there and play their game and Barca probably had 3 points coming their way. Playing their usual game has been uncommon since returning, though. Frustration on the face of Messi is pretty hard to conceal right now.
La Liga is Real Madrid and Barca, then everybody else. The best club out of the “everyone else” group is Atletico Madrid. They’re trying to protect third in La Liga down the stretch. Catching Real for the league title is impossible at this juncture. However, with a solid record of 15-14-4, Atletico Madrid don’t lose very often.
That gives them 59 points for a 2-point advantage on Sevilla for third. Mallorca are facing relegation as the 18th ranked club in Spain. They are ahead of Leganes and Espanyol, but that’s all their 29 points gets them. Head below for our free Atletico Madrid vs. Mallorca pick for July 3, 2020 in La Liga.
Atletico Madrid vs. Mallorca La Liga Betting Odds:
Atletico Madrid vs. Mallorca Prediction:
Mallorca are doing their best to avoid relegation, but it’s been a rough season for them. They have a record of 8-5-20 with just 29 points. Mallorca are 5 points behind Celta Vigo for 17th in La Liga. They pulled within 5 points thanks to an impressive effort against Celta Vigo on Tuesday. Mallorca pounded Celta Vigo for a 5-1 win.
It marked their first win since March 7 against Eibar. They’ve lost four matches, a draw, and a loss since returning to action in mid-June. Mallorca scored a monster upset over Real Madrid earlier in the season on October 19, 2019. However, other than that, Mallorca have done a lot of nothing against superior opponents.
They have been dreadful as a visiting club in the 2019-20 La Liga campaign. Mallorca has scored just 0.81 goals per match, while allowing 2.25 goals per match. That adds up to a lot of losses for Mallorca on the road. The beatdown they put on Celta Vigo was at home, but now they’re on the road against an Atletico Madrid squad in good form.
Atletico Madrid gave Barca all that they could handle on Tuesday. Saul Niguez scored twice on penalty kicks to propel Atletico to a draw against Barca. They are back home on Friday, where they’ve been strong with 1.44 goals per match and 0.66 goals conceded. On the injury front, there aren’t too many concerns except defender Sime Vrsalko who will sit out again.
The blowout win over Celta Vigo did come at a cost for Mallorca. Leading scorer, Ante Budimir, and centre back Martin Valjent are both sidelined because of yellow cards. The presence of Budimir in the Mallorca lineup on the road would have helped greatly today. However, Mallorca will have to give a go at this one without their most dangerous scorer. If Atletico Madrid care to play today, a 2-0 or 3-0 win seems to be in their sights.
