The return to the pitch hasn’t been met with much excitement for Juventus. They expected to return to play with success in the Coppa Italia. That didn’t happen with Napoli defeating Juventus on penalties, 4-2. The match was played behind closed doors in Rome. Juventus went in as the favourites and left with frustration on their faces.
You can find most of that frustration on the face of Cristiano Ronaldo. There seems to be some behind the door drama between Ronaldo and Maurizio Sarri. After Ronaldo’s sister criticized Sarri, it isn’t very behind the door any longer that Ronaldo and the bench boss for Juventus are not getting along right now.
Ronaldo’s ego isn’t easy for the best of coaches to handle, and for a hard nosed guy like Sarri, their personalities can probably clash at times. Beyond the ego, though, Ronaldo is a great competitor that doesn’t like losing. He’s a fiery guy who doesn’t hide his feelings too well. If Ronaldo is getting called out, it likely doesn’t help matters positively. In any event, Ronaldo and Sarri recently had a meeting to discuss the offensive issues that Juventus had against AC Milan and Napoli.
AC Milan and Napoli are beatable clubs, or at least, it should have been two winnable outings for Juventus. They just didn’t have it in the Coppa Italia. The offensive problems might be due to the layoff, but more is expected out of a talented club like Juventus regardless of three months off. It’s not like AC Milan and Napoli were playing either during the shutdown. Juventus must put the loss in the past quickly.
They are in the thick of a close Serie A race with Lazio. Juventus have just a 1-point advantage on Lazio. They’re 20-3-3 on the season for 63 points. Lazio are hanging in there tough at 19-5-2 and 62 points. There isn’t any time for Juventus to get stuck in a rut. They have other matters to deal with after losing the Coppa Italia. Responding with a Serie A championship would quickly put that loss to Napoli in the past. One has to believe that Ronaldo is going to put forth a full effort here for 90+ minutes on Monday. Bologna vs. Juventus Serie A Betting Odds:
Bologna vs. Juventus Prediction:
Two mediocre performances by Juventus after a lengthy layoff could be understandable. However, if this thing drags out and they struggle against Bologna on Monday, there is going to be more drama for Ronaldo and Juventus. Will the meeting between Ronaldo and Sarri clear the air in the locker room? It’s good news to hear that they got together and worked out their differences, but we’ll see if it translates to a better performance today.
Lazio are going to be licking their chops if Juventus comes up with another mediocre outing in this one. Prior to the shutdown, Juventus had a clean 2-0 win over Internazionale on March 8. That was their third straight win, but then the shutdown came and their momentum was gone. All it should take is one solid performance to get them back on track, though. While the offence has been invisible, their defence was strong against Napoli and AC Milan. Juventus has conceded only 0.92 goals per match in Serie A this campaign. Bologna goes into Monday with an average of 1.46 goals scored on the season.
My biggest concern for Bologna is the massive layoff, though. Juventus have already played two competitive matches, while Bologna have not played since a 2-0 loss against Lazio on February 29. If we want to talk about how rusty Juventus was against AC Milan and Napoli, then there should be some consideration for the possibility that Bologna won’t be in pristine shape here.
Bologna are a decent 9-7-10 club, but they might be cold in their first match back, against a Juventus team that should come out fast after disappointment in the Coppa Italia. Bologna will have injury and suspension concerns for this match as well. Jerdy Schouten, Mattia Bani, and Federico Santander are all sitting out with suspensions, while Andreas Skov Olsen is on the shelf with an injury. Expect this to be bounce back time for the defending champs. Ronaldo has a bit too much pride to allow this club to play a sloppy brand of football in three straight matches. He will be focused for Monday. Look for Juventus to dispose of Bologna by a final score of 1-0 or 2-0.
