One of the negative aspects of the final group stage matches is when two teams square off with barely nothing to play for. That scenario will unfold Wednesday in Brazil as two tournament newbies square off to in all likelihood conclude their 2014 World Cup. Iran, who almost drew Argentina on Saturday will do battle with the unfortunate Bosnians.
While the Iranians still possess a slim chance of progression, it’ll take a lot of good fortune. They’ll need to defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina, while hoping they somehow gain two goals on differential against Nigeria. While the Nigerians have a tough task against Argentina, expect Nigeria to play cautious and ensure their advancement.
For the Bosnians, despite sitting on zero points at the moment, they remain a talented group that has generated their fair share of chances in Brazil. Against Nigeria, they seemed to be the better side for much of the match, and they did manage to score before it was wrongly called offside by the linesman. Bosnia is making its World Cup debut, and it’d be a shame if they went out with a whimper. This is a squad with solid firepower and should be able to manage some goals on Wednesday.

Bosnia-Herzegovina vs. Iran Pick:
As is usually the case in these final matches when both sides have little to lose or gain, expect a wide-open and offensive affair. For the Iranians, they haven’t really had the chance to do that here in Brazil, but against a very suspect back0line of Bosnia, expect Iran to really push for goals and a victory here.
On the other side, the Bosnians will be no different. While their trip can already be categorized a disappointment, they remain a very talented side that can do some damage offensively. In their first two games against Argentina and Nigeria, they had a plethora of chances that just couldn’t be finished. Odds are their luck changes against Iran, and their talented players up front are able to find the back of the net. Edin Dzeko is a premier striker and although he hasn’t finished like one in Brazil, a dominant showing against Iran could salvage his competition.
Expect an open match right from kick-off. Iran needs goals to assure it has a remote chance at qualifying for the next round, while Bosnia is generally an attack-minded team that will look to apply the pressure early. Although Iran is accustomed to playing a defensive style, the situation within the group won’t allow for that. Expect a more offensive style with more attack-minded players inserted into the starting line-up. Up front, it’s believed that Jahan Bakhsh will play over the more defensive Ashkan Dejagah. The Iranians will go for goals.
While the Bosnians may find it difficult to be motivated for this final match, it’s still the World Cup and they still have the chance to show the world that had some calls gone the other way, it could realistically be them progressing. Their attacking flair and creativity up front means they’ll have fun in this wide-open encounter. It’s a good situation when both teams are trying for goals, and look for that scenario to unfold on Wednesday afternoon.
