Barcelona head to Vigo for a Thursday evening match against Celta Vigo. They will be looking to avoid an upset against Celta Vigo squad that has been off to a pretty respectable start in 2020. There hasn’t been anything wrong with their 1-2-0 opening stretch in the 2020-21 LaLiga campaign. After all, Celta Vigo barely avoided relegation last year. They get a second life in LaLiga after finishing a point ahead of Leganes. Celta Vigo needed every point to stay in LaLiga.
Now that they’re still here, Celta Vigo appear to be motivated to not cut it that close this season. Maybe they surprise and do enough to be a Europa League qualifier or go to the group stage? I’m not so high on that scenario playing out, but their form has been solid thus far, and believe they can use this as a springboard into the next season. That was actually the second straight season that Celta Vigo had to fight to stay out of relegation territory.
Celta Vigo finished with a record of 10-11-17 and 41 points in 2018-19. That put them 4 points away from relegation, and then in 2019-20, Celta Vigo went 7-16-15 to avoid relegation by a point. They are playing with fire, but at least so far, have looked determined to put a better campaign together for 2020-21.
That said, it’s only been three matches, and they don’t have a “good” win on their resume. Their win came against Valencia, which was fairly impressive, but this match against Barcelona is going to give us a better idea regarding them. Along with that win, Celta Vigo took a draw against Eibar and Valladolid for a point.
Valladolid and Eibar finished 13th and 14th last season. So, we can’t come to too many conclusions with this club yet. Even though they’re hosting Barcelona here, it would be awfully impressive if they can hang in there and make it a competitive contest.
It doesn’t have to be a win, or even a draw, but either scenario would be a big confidence booster. Barcelona head into their second LaLiga match on Thursday with a record of 1-0-0. Head below for our free Celta Vigo vs. Barcelona pick for October 1, 2020.

Celta Vigo vs. Barcelona Prediction:
Celta Vigo must bring their best game to the pitch on Thursday if they’re going to bother Barcelona in this match. Since losing in the Champions League quarterfinal on August 14, Barca responded with four straight wins. That was an ugly look at the Champions League, with Barca being embarrassed by a score of 8-2 against Bayern Munich.
It almost put a stamp on Lionel’s Messi trip out of town, but he will stick through this season. He’s been frustrated and his frustration was amplified even more recently when Luis Suarez was let go by Barcelona. Tremendous player by all accounts, but his patience is running thin with his current club.
With Barcelona making easy work of their last four opponents, it hasn’t seemed to be much of a distraction. However, they really need a focused Messi to overcome Real Madrid in this 2020-21 campaign. As far as today is concerned, it would be easy to lose focus going on the road to play an inferior club in Celta Vigo. They played Barca tough in their last meeting, with a 2-2 draw in June.
That was a wake up call, as they played much better football thereafter. They don’t need a wake up call this early in the season. Not after getting drilled not that long ago against Bayern. That should have been enough of a message. In their latest outing, Barca dispatched a decent Villarreal club by a score of 4-0 on September 27.
That was sending a message. Ansu Fati scored quick goals back-to-back at the 15 and 19 minute mark. Messi followed with a goal on a penalty at the 35 mark to quickly put the match away. I’m not expecting Barca to easily slice through Celta Vigo in this one on the road. They probably don’t bring their full focus to this match, allowing Celta Vigo to hang tough. In any event, a 2-1 or 3-1 win in favour of Barcelona still looks like a good prediction here.
