Chelsea and Krasnodar meet at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday for the sixth and final matchday of the first round. Krasnodar has already accepted their fate, and will not be advancing to the Europa League or knockout stage of the Champions League. Krasnodar enters Tuesday with a record of 1-1-3 and 4 points. In other words, the end of the road is going to be at Stamford Bridge for them on Tuesday. The Russian club has nothing to lose against Chelsea today, so they can let loose in this one.
Sometimes that can be a good thing, and other times not so good at all. If Krasnodar have already mailed it in and aren’t interested in playing on Tuesday, then Chelsea will be able to name the score at Stamford Bridge. However, it could get interesting if Krasnodar are motivated in accomplishing an upset, and Chelsea is already thinking ahead to the knockout round. I think if those two variables come true, then an upset could be brewing in London. That’s asking a lot of Krasnodar, though.
Krasnodar are ninth in the Russian Premier League this season. They own a record of 7-3-7 and 24 points. To get to the Champions League in 2020-21, Krasnodar advanced to the Champions League qualifying round last season. They finished with a record of 14-10-6 and 52 points for third in Russia. It was an unlikely scenario that Krasnodar got into this position to begin with. The fact that Krasnodar are playing right now against Chelsea in the Champions League is an accomplishment in its own right.
The club that Krasnodar was then isn’t what we’ve been seeing now, though. They’ve been struggling in Russia, and struggled in the Champions League against the best Europe has to offer. Krasnodar’s lone win came against Rennes by a score of 1-0 last Wednesday. Rennes sits at the bottom of Group E with a record of 0-1-4. That game was a battle to decide who would likely go without a win in the Champions League 2020-21 campaign. I don’t see Krasnodar finding their second win in London on Tuesday, but we’ll see how much Chelsea cares. Head below for our free Chelsea vs. Krasnodar pick for December 8, 2020.
Chelsea FC vs. Krasnodar Champions League Betting Odds:
Chelsea vs. Krasnodar Prediction:
Chelsea is the only club in Group E with a goal differential in the positive. They have been terrific with a +12 and clearly the class of this group. Sevilla is the only club that has been able to hold a flame up to Chelsea, but even then, Sevilla has a -1 in the goal differential department. Chelsea heads into the sixth matchday with a record of 4-1-0. Their draw came against Sevilla in the first matchday in a scoreless match.
However, in their next meeting, Chelsea dismantled Sevilla for a 4-0 win on December 2. Chelsea returned to the Premier League with confidence and took down Leeds by a score of 3-1 in that match. They own a record of 6-4-1 and 22 points in the Champions League for third in the table. Chelsea trails Liverpool and Tottenham by a couple of points in the EPL table. They are within striking distance, and will comfortably move on to the knockout stage in the Champions League.
Chelsea has been dominant with a staggering 2.6 goals scored and just 0.2 goals conceded per match. They have been the best club in this group by a mile. Chelsea haven’t allowed a goal in their pitch at Stamford Bridge. Conversely, Krasnodar has struggled on the road, with 1.22 goals conceded and 0.89 goals scored per match.
Hakim Ziyech is expected to miss this match after tweaking a hamstring against Leeds, but Chelsea is otherwise in fine form health wise. Chelsea torched Krasnodar for a 4-0 win in their first match in this campaign. It was a lopsided affair, with Chelsea dominating the time of possession by 71% to 29% on the road in Russia. Chelsea should be good for another class performance in Group E, as they bury the visitors by a score of 3-0 or 4-0 on Tuesday in London.
