Chelsea vs. Liverpool Pick – EPL July 22

Coming off of a big victory against Manchester United in the FA Cup over the weekend, Chelsea will look to once again secure a huge result and guarantee their Champions League qualification on Wednesday.

The Blues have been wildly inconsistent since coming out of the restart, though Frank Lampard’s side has shown the ability to flip the proverbial switch when it matters most. Against Liverpool on Wednesday afternoon, that is surely a clash that should bring out the best in a young Chelsea side.

There are also some big-time implications, as Chelsea continues to engaged in a tense battle for the final Champions League spots with both Leicester and Man United. One team will be left out from the party, and with all the big spending Chelsea has done – it really cannot be them.

Their hosts Liverpool have simply been coasting under Jurgen Klopp since winning the league. They cannot exceed the points record set by Man City in 2017-18, so it remains to be seen what type of lineup the Reds will trot out. Regardless, Liverpool are the title-winners for a reason, and would be keen to really put a dent into their rival Chelsea’s season.

With all of the implications and talent on display, it does make Liverpool v. Chelsea a must-see encounter. Can the Blues guarantee a Champions League spot? Or will Klopp’s Liverpool prove once again why they’re the class of the Premier League? We have all the answers below the posted odds, along with team news and a betting prediction. Liverpool vs. Chelsea Pick:

With a long layoff ahead, and no upcoming Champions League clashes – expect Jurgen Klopp to give his stars one final run-through at Anfield on Wednesday. It’s believed that after the match there will be a mini-celebration for them winning the title, and you’d think they’d be eager to celebrate after a win, opposed to a loss.

Just James Milner, Jordan Henderson, and Joel Matip will be missing from selection, so Klopp will have a talented array of pieces to choose from. Expect the Reds to again be solid at the back, with the imposing Virgil van Dijk playing a key role in the centre of defense. He’ll be flanked by talented wing-backs in Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold. That duo have been crucial to Liverpool’s success all season, with dangerous runs and sweeping crosses. Much of the Reds’ offense comes from this pairing.

Up top, a suspect Chelsea back-line will need to contend with a dangerous front three of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane. That trio can score on anyone, and their combination of speed, skill, and finishing prowess has to worry Frank Lampard.

WHICH LIVERPOOL WILL SHOW UP?
That said, you do wonder about their mindset. With truly nothing to play for, against a squad with a ton on the line – Chelsea will certainly enter the hungrier and more motivated group. You could also argue Frank Lampard’s squad is the more in-form side at the moment. Their expected goal metrics have been much better since the restart, and they’re mostly healthy with injuries.

Expect Lampard to again employ a three-man defense, requiring better balance and more support from the midfielders. Jorginho will play in the centre, and he’s been excellent of late. He’ll be crucial at winning balls and shutting down dangerous Liverpool attacks as they break quickly.

Up top, Chelsea boasts an in-form front three of Willian, Christian Pulisic, and the big target-man Olivier Giroud. They’ve proven to complement each other very well in recent fixtures, and should be counted on to find the net on Wednesday.

Despite Liverpool’s recent mistakes, it’s hard to see them getting fully engaged in this contest. Chelsea are a rapidly improving group, and one that has proven it can beat teams in a multitude of different ways. They’ve steadied their back-line, and their attack poses problems. Expect both teams to score, and ultimately the best value lies in a juicy draw price. Liverpool will be content with that, while Chelsea will feel that still gives them an excellent chance at Champions League qualification heading into the weekend.
