Cameroon and Denmark both began their World Cup tournaments with defeats, yet their hopes of advancing still remain very much intact.
For Denmark, no shame exists in losing to a powerful squad from the Netherlands. The Danes played quite well throughout the match, and even went into halftime locked in with a scoreless draw. For a team that was battling flu problems and a plethora of injury concerns to their best players, the performance was acceptable for the Danes. The defeat however was still demoralizing, considering the opening tally went in off the head of Denmark defender Simon Poulsen.
Denmark vs Cameroon Betting Odds:
Over 2 (+100)
Under 2 (-115)
Cameroon meanwhile was believed to have a home-continent advantage over their first opponents from Japan. However that clearly was not the case. The Blue Samurai snagged victory from the African nation on a huge defensive gaffe off of a cross. In losing to what was considered the weakest team in Group E, Cameroon now faces an uphill battle and will be forced to obtain positive results from both a healthy Danish side, and group powerhouses from the Netherlands.
Keys to the Game:
Denmark will have to be focused on scoring on the opposition’s net, opposed to their own this time. It seems odd, but Simon Poulsen’s own goal prevented the Danes from what would have been a valuable point against the Netherlands. As for scoring on Cameroon, Denmark will need their attack to get back to full fitness. All of Jon Dahl Tomasson, Niclas Bendtner, and Mikkel Beckmann are nursing injuries and have been training alone in the lead-up to this match. If they remain out against Cameroon, the Danish attack will suffer immensely. Star defender Simon Kjaer battled through the pain against the Netherlands, and should continue to do so throughout the tournament. Although the team hasn’t scored in their past three matches, the Danes remain upbeat and fully aware that they must capture three points for a realistic shot at advancing.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon also know they must obtain victory against a vulnerable Denmark side following their disappointing defeat to Japan. Left with a tough match against the Netherlands, Cameroon must push hard for a win or else they could see themselves eliminated before that final clash. For a team with such high hopes of advancing, the Lions certainly did not expect to be in this position. The frustration within the camp has also spilled into the media, with recent word reporting that some of the senior players on Cameroon have argued with coach Paul Le Guen to reconsider his team selection for the Denmark game. These players believe that all of the youngsters the coach has included are simply not ready to handle the pressure, and calls for Alex and Robert Song, as well as Geremi to re-enter the lineup have been made. With dysfunction running through the Cameroon squad, it will be interesting to see if they can put their differences aside and show their real strengths against the Danes.
What to Expect:
Both teams here desperately need three points. Don’t expect to see anything held back in a game that will surely be the difference between playing in the next round, and heading home early. At the moment, Cameroon and Denmark both have irrefutable flaws within their camps. The Danes are battling a horrible rash of injuries, and the Cameroonians have expressed dissatisfaction publicly with their coach. The team that suppresses and deals with the problems the best will likely win this match. Although Denmark may have plenty of people on the injured list, this is the World Cup and it comes around once every 4 years. Expect the likes of Bendtner and Tomasson to be raring to go and expose the shoddy defense of the Indomitable Lions. As we’ve seen so far in this tournament with France, team dysfunction hinders performance. Expect another unorganized and underwhelming Cameroon squad against Denmark.
