Fabio Capello’s England side kick-off their World Cup tournament against a United States team that many consider to be under-rated going into this competition. Both England and the U.S. qualified for South Africa 2010 in comfortable style. England won nine out of their ten qualifying games, while Bob Bradley’s U.S. team qualified with a game to spare after a 3-2 victory over Honduras to mark their 6th successive appearance at the World Cup.
England vs USA Betting Odds for World Cup Match June 12:
Over 2.5 (+101)
Under 2.5 (-121)
Thanks to their resurgence under Coach Fabio Capello, England fans will be quietly confident about their team’s chances at this year’s tournament. Under previous coaches, England lacked discipline and organization against the top sides and this problem was reflected in the team’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008. But Capello is a highly respected authority figure within the England camp and seems to have finally banished the team’s bad habits.
England’s star man going into the tournament is Manchester United’s fiery forward Wayne Rooney. His 26 goals in this season’s English Premier League was a personal best for the England striker. While there’s certainly no doubting Rooney’s prodigious ability, there are questions marks still over his temperament. Opposition players will try to anger Rooney to put him off his game, but with Capello as Coach, we should see a far more focused and composed Rooney for South Africa 2010.
Although, at the highest level of international soccer, the U.S. team doesn’t have the strongest reputation, they do have a highly experienced group of players going into the World Cup. With players representing some of the best leagues in the world, such as the English Premier League, the Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga, this team certainly has the talent to make a big impression in South Africa.
The man with one of the most recognizable names in North American soccer, Landon Donovan is the talisman for this U.S. team. Donovan’s speed and dribbling ability were showcased in England’s Premier League this season during his loan spell at Everton, where he made an excellent impression against some of the best defenders in the world. For the U.S. to do well at South Africa 2010, they must utilize Donovan’s pace to their full advantage.
These two sets of players have a great deal of experience playing against one another for their club teams in England’s Premier League. Americans, Tim Howard (Everton) Clint Dempsey (Fulham) Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes), Jonathon Spector (West Ham) and Jozy Altidore (Villareal) have all played, at one time or another, in England’s top soccer league and so this game will likely have a fast-tempo Premier League feel . The defining factor in this matchup will be Wayne Rooney. If The U.S. allow Rooney to dictate play from his central striking role, he is capable of scoring at will and helping his team-mates to get onto the score sheet as well. The U.S. have the talent to cause an upset, but England are still solid favorites for the victory in what could turn out to be a very tight game.
