EPL Matchweek 10 – Manchester United vs Everton Pick

Manchester United are hosts to Everton this Sunday in an intriguing Matchweek 10 game. Manchester United are trying to get back on track in the English Premier League and start winning, while Everton are trying to maintain their 3-match winning streak.

Manchester United are in the middle of their worst start in EPL history. The Red Devils are currently in the 10th place in the EPL with 14 points from their opening 9 matches. Manchester United have already lost 3 times to Tottenham, Brighton, and West Ham United. The 0-3 defeat by Tottenham at Old Trafford has been particularly painful for the Red Devils, having dominated that rivalry for the better part of the last 2 decades.

Everton had a tough opening of their English Premier League season, with just 1 win from their opening 6 matches, including 2 losses and 3 draws. Since then, they have won 3 straight matches and currently find themselves in the 8th place in the EPL with 16 points from opening 8 matches.

I have prepared a short preview for the match, along with my pick for this matchup, so feel free to read on.

Manchester United vs Everton Odds

Manchester United vs Everton Pick

Manchester United and Everton are the founding clubs of the initial English Premier League season and have a long history of spectacular matches between themselves. This time around we might get another gem, as Manchester United are looking for a way to break free from their poor form and Everton are red-hot with 3 straight wins in the EPL.

Although Manchester United are the most successful club in the English Premier League history, this season has been far from the club’s high standards. The worst start in EPL in club history has a lot to do with their abysmal defense, where they have allowed a whopping 16 goals in 9 opening matches. Offensively, they have been average, scoring 15 goals in as many matches.

Everton has struggled in the opening 6 matches of their EPL season, drawing 3 and losing 2, along with a single win. Lately, Marco Silva’s side has been playing great soccer and they have won 3 consecutive matches in the EPL. The most obvious improvement has been the defense which has allowed only 1 goal in those 3 matches. Offensively, Everton has scored 15 goals in 9 matches in the EPL, which is good enough for a 5th place in the EPL.

Manchester United and Everton have met on 199 previous occasions, with the Red Devils dominating the matchup with 87 wins, Everton have won 69 and 43 matches have ended in a draw. In recent history, Manchester United have been even more dominant winning 6 out of the last 10 matches, Everton winning 2 and 2 ending up in a draw.

If we look at the games at Old Trafford, the situation is even bleaker for Everton. They have won just a single game at Old Trafford since 1999. It was in 2013, when they won 0-1 in an English Premier League match. When it comes to goals, the matchup has been quite unpredictable lately, with 5 out of the last 10 matches ending up with more than 2.5 goals scored and 5 with less.

Both clubs are much more formidable on the offensive side of the ball. Manchester United attack is spearheaded by the trio of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford, with the support of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata. Similarly, Everton relies on the duo of Richarlison and Theo Walcott as the primary targets for quick attacking moves, while the midfield support is provided by Sigurdsson, Gomes, and Bernard.

Manchester United have been hit by an injury bug lately and the list of players that Jose Mourinho will not have at his disposal is huge. Defender Antonio Valencia will not play in this match due to a coach’s decision, midfielder Marouane Fellaini is out with a groin injury, defender Phil Jones is out with a knee injury, midfielder Jessy Lingard is out with a groin injury, midfielder Scott McTominay is out with a knee injury, defender Marcus Rojo is out with a knock and forward Alexis Sanchez is out with a knock as well. Everton, on the other hand, is expected to be fully healthy for this one.

The key for this matchup will be in protecting your own net. Both sides have struggled to do this at a high rate this season. Manchester United have allowed 16 and Everton 12 goals in 9 matches in the EPL. That kind of defensive undermines the rest of the game plan that both sides might have. Dominating the midfield will be the second priority, as both sides are capable of scoring a lot of goals, Manchester United through the use of their fantastic target man Romelu Lukaku and Everton through the pace of Richarlison and Theo Walcott.

I find it hard to pick against Manchester United’s veil of invincibility at Old Trafford, when it comes to playing Everton, but I find it even harder to trust them this season to perform at the level that is expected of them. Everton has been playing well lately and they just might pull off a win at Old Trafford this time around. I think the best bet is to rely on goals, which both sides score and are defensive liabilities.
