FC Barcelona vs. Espanyol Pick – La Liga July 8, 2020

Barcelona play host to Espanyol at Camp Nou on Wednesday in an important matchup for Barca. It doesn’t look like much against a weak Espanyol club, but this isn’t the time for Barcelona to revert back to their lazy ways. They seemed to get it out of their system on Sunday against Villarreal with a 4-1 drubbing on the road. And don’t get it twisted, that’s not a joke of a win for Barcelona.

Villarreal are a really good team that could have pulled off an upset. However, Barcelona was having none of that, as they routed Villarreal with an impressive win of 4-1. It’s the most complete effort that we’ve seen from Barcelona since returning from the layoff. While Zidane and company have played like there hasn’t been any break, Barcelona might have needed a few matches to get their feet underneath them again.

With Real Madrid winning earlier in the day on Sunday as well, it was a must-win situation for Barcelona against Villarreal. If they lose there then Real Madrid likely pull away, and capture the La Liga title without much pushback. Real Madrid currently have a 4-point lead on Barcelona. There are four Matchdays left in the season for Barca and Real. That doesn’t provide much room for error.

Barcelona must treat this game the same way they did on Sunday versus Villarreal. They went into that one with a good attitude and the results translated on the pitch. Quique Setien was on a really hot seat going into that one. He will continue to remain on the hot seat over the next four matches. An upset or draw against Espanyol and Setien’s chair might be on fire despite the effort on Sunday.

Espanyol are coming off a sloppy loss against Leganes on Sunday. They fell by a score of 1-0 and to 5-9-20 on the season. Espanyol are in real danger of getting relegated with their 24 points. The loss against Leganes was a killshot to that bid. Leganes are ahead of Espanyol by 4 points, while Mallorca is 5 points ahead in the table. Espanyol needs an upset against Barca on the road. Head below for our free Barcelona vs. Espanyol pick for July 8, 2020 in La Liga.

FC Barcelona vs. Espanyol Prediction:

Espanyol were 2-0 winners over Alaves to open up after the lockdown. That was an encouraging sign for Espanyol, though six games later Espanyol has recorded just 1 additional point. Since a 0-0 draw against Getafe on June 16, Espanyol has gone point-less in five straight outings. Their best effort might have been a 1-0 loss versus Real Madrid on June 28.

They kept things close despite failing to get any points. Espanyol face an uphill battle on the road at Camp Nou in this one. They have scored just 0.79 goals per match while conceding 1.59 goals per match in 2019-20. Their goal scoring drops a bit on the road, with 0.71 goals scored per match and 1.47 goals conceded.

I don’t know how much Espanyol has to play today. They have to be just about perfect down the stretch to avoid relegation and we know that isn’t happening. And I think they know that as well. A loss against Barcelona today and they’re getting relegated. Even if they do find a way to upset Barca, there isn’t any room for error in their remaining three matches of the La Liga season.

Espanyol will have to operate without Jonathan Calleri after getting sent off the pitch with a red card against Leganes. Barca are a force at Camp Nou. They’ve notched 2.94 goals per match and yielded just 0.82 goals per match. I think they got rid of the rust against Villarreal, and should be ready for a big Wednesday against Espanyol. Expect a 3-0 or 4-0 win for Barca to send Espanyol down to the Segunda Division today.
