The Belarusian Premier League is still going strong, somewhat, as Belarus will play another weekend of football. There are growing financial difficulties for some clubs. In particular, FC Slutsk are going through a rough time because of Covid-19. They’re a club that depends on funding from a local sugar mill, though the factory is going through financial struggles and is having trouble supporting the club.
Football fans from Australia started a fundraiser online to support the club, and there’s been over $3,000 in donations already. How long they can sustain that remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a nice gesture. It also highlights how fragile some of these smaller sports leagues are. Not every sports league has a license to print money.
BATE Borisov has money, so we’re not going to have to worry about them. They’re the most successful club in league history, and their 13 championships in a row might be an impossible accomplishment to beat. BATE are the most respected club across Europe in the Belarusian Premier League. However, they didn’t win the league finals last season, and have been slightly slow starters in 2020. It’s still too early to say one way or the other about BATE Borisov, but Belarus has been accustomed to a better product on the pitch.
Despite failing to win 14 straight titles in the Belarusian Premier League, BATE were still a potent club in 2019. They finished the season with a record of 22-4-4 with 70 points. It’s been a mediocre start thus far with a mark of 2-1-2 in a tie for 7th on the ladder. It begs the question whether it’s just a slow start because of carelessness and getting distracted by the coronavirus, or this is really the new BATE.
BATE will be in action against FC Gorodeya on Saturday at Gorodeya Stadium. Gorodeya have gotten off to a respectable start, and a win over BATE, would provide them with another shot of confidence. Gorodeya heads into Saturday with a record of 3-0-2 and 9 points for a tie with three other clubs for 4th on the ladder. Head below for our free FC Gorodeya vs. BATE Borisov pick.
FC Gorodeya vs. BATE Borisov Belarusian Premier League Betting Odds:
FC Gorodeya vs. BATE Borisov Prediction:
There are some fans of the Belarusian Premier League that know nothing but BATE Borisov football. They’ve been so dominant that last season was the first year that some of the younger fans saw somebody different than BATE win a title. It could be a changing of the guard in Belarus, but it’s still early in the campaign, and I’m confident that BATE can still go on a big run.
BATE has recorded 1.2 goals per match, while allowing 1 goal a match in 2020. That’s rather average and nothing like the production we’ve seen from them before. Last season BATE finished the season with a terrific goal differential of +40. This season they’re hovering just above even at +1, though expect that to rise as we get deeper into the 2020 season. They’re coming off a draw against a competitive Torpedo BelAZ squad. Statistically they were the far superior club, having possession of the ball for 62% match and putting 10 shots on target as opposed to 3 for Torpedo.
Gorodeya were an average outfit in 2019 and have been rather average this season as well. They notched a record of 12-8-10 with 44 points. Gorodeya recorded a goal differential of +2. I think they’re on a similar path this season. They’re a hair above .500 five matches into the season with a record of 3-0-2.
This is after they lost their first two matches, but have looked much better of late with three straight wins. Gorodeya are coming off a win over Energetyk by a score of 1-0. They also beat Dinamo Minsk and Belshina, with no goal conceded since a 2-0 loss versus Shakytor on March 20. I suspect that this could be a letdown spot for Gorodeya on Saturday. Look for a 1-0 or 2-0 win for BATE.
