Germany vs. China Pick – Women’s World Cup – June 8

Action continues at the World Cup on Saturday, and it’s a busy slate of games with three matches going from France. The one that we’ll focus on will be first up in what promises to be a competitive Group B at this tournament, featuring Germany and China.

The Germans enter the clear favourites in this group, but China too has big desires to advance to the knockout round. But it won’t be easy with a young and upstart Spanish side lurking as well.

Germany enters France 2019 with a lot of uncertainty within their games. They’ve had some lacklustre years of late, and many are skeptical as to whether or not they can return to their glory days when they were constant threats to be world champions.

For the Chinese women, they might enter this group as underdogs – but they certainly do not see it that way. China enters a very young group and though they might be four years away from truly doing damage, the Chinese have punch up front with world-class talent that can trouble the German defense.

This should be a tone-setting game to tell fans and pundits which German side will show up? Read on below for a detailed breakdown on how we see the game unfolding between Germany and China.

Germany vs. China Betting Odds:

Germany (-345)
China (+540)
Draw (+420)

Over 2.5 (-133)
Under 2.5 (+113)

Germany -1.5 (-109)
China +1.5 (-111)

Germany vs. China Pick:

Despite the fact that the Chinese vow they can hang with the world’s best, it’s likely going to be a case of this tournament being a few years too soon for their youthful group. The Germans are hungry after recent failures, and their star duo of Alexandra Popp and Dzsenifer Marozsan should be able to run rampant on the Chinese backline. Marozsan in particular is a crafty and creative player and should be able to unlock the Chinese defense, providing excellent service and chances at goal.

China enter this match in very poor recent form, having lost four straight contest entering this match. They’ve only scored three goals in those games, and despite some perceived talent up front with Wang Shuang, there clearly isn’t enough support to put the ball over the line with any level of consistency.

Ultimately, the supreme disparity in skill and creativity with Germans like Popp and Marozsan should win out and vault the Germans to a very positive start at France 2019. I am a bit surprised the spread in this match isn’t higher, as I believe there is real value on the favoured Germans -1.5 goals. Germany is rounding into form of late and have been scoring more frequently than previous versions of this side. China will provide some resistance with their handful of talented players, but they just don’t have the depth at key positions to limit the powerful and motivated German women for a full 90 minutes. Expect a comfortable and clinical German two-goal victory on Saturday.
