Champions League play continues on Wednesday with eight matches. The most interesting match has to be Juventus versus Barcelona. That is going to take place just after Istanbul and Paris Saint-Germain, so you can catch both. We are currently in the group stage of the Champions League, with a bullseye squarely on Bayern Munich. I can’t say that any other club in Europe appears ready to take the trophy from Bayern right now, but that’s why they play the matches.
PSG opened group play in the Champions League with a stunning upset against Manchester United. As heavy underdogs, Manchester United sprung the upset by a score of 2-1. It’s been a tough sequence for Manchester United, as they haven’t won the EPL since the 2012-13 campaign, and the Champions League since 2008.
For a club struggling to score upsets, it was a great sign for Manchester United to beat a club of PSG’s caliber. If PSG were fully healthy in that game, do we see a loss for them there? Maybe not, but they still had a talent advantage over Man U and should have won. Man U followed up with a draw against Chelsea in EPL competition.
PSG took their frustration out on Dijon in their next outing on Saturday by a score of 4-0. That’s expected versus a team of Dijon’s calibre. Dijon is not regarded as a top French club. They rank dead last through eight matches and are going to be competing to avoid relegation in Ligue 1. That was the perfect opponent for PSG to rediscover their groove against.
Istanbul opened the group stage of the Champions League with a 2-0 loss against RB Leipzig on October 20. They’re a formidable club out of Germany from the Bundesliga. It went as expected for Istanbul. They did the same as PSG by returning to league play and crushing the opposition. Istanbul are coming off a 5-1 dismantling of Antalyaspor. That was a tremendous effort, but more might be needed for Wednesday. Head below for our free Istanbul vs. PSG pick for October 28, 2020.
Istanbul vs. Paris Saint-Germain Champions League Betting Odds:
Istanbul vs. PSG Prediction:
Mosie Kean and Kylian Mbappe is all PSG needed to stomp on Dijon. Kaen got the scoring started at the 2 minute mark, and then he found the net again at 23 minutes. Mbappe closed out the match in the final ten minutes with a couple of quick goals. Neymar and Mbappe together on the pitch together at the same time can often result in beautiful football.
However, if neither of them want to play, like what happened against Manchester United, this can be a very pedestrian PSG squad. Terrific players, but if they get too overconfident, Istanbul can make this a game on Wednesday.
Juan Bernat, Thilo Kehrer, and Idrissa Gueye are all expected to be absent for PSG in this match. Angel Di Maria and Layvin Kurzawa on the other hand will be back in the lineup after serving suspensions against Dijon. They really didn’t need them for that match.
While PSG are not a healthy squad going into this match, Istanbul has a long list of injuries to go over. If they had a healthy side going into this one on Wednesday, I’d give them far more of a better chance of making this a competitive match.
However, as it stands, Istanbul will be without Nacer Chadli, Junior Caicara, Ugur Ucar, and Okechukwu Azubuikehave are not going to be present for this one. They were playing strong football against Antalyaspor, but otherwise, Istanbul has been a pedestrian club while injured. They’ve won four of their last 12 matches, all against clubs you would expect them to beat.
However, versus tougher opponents, Istanbul lost to Copenhagen on August 5 by a score of 3-0, and then 2-0 against RB Leipzig just eight days ago. This match comes down to the willingness of PSG wanting to play well.
If Neymar and Mbappe wake up on Wednesday with some motivation, PSG should clear Istanbul easily. I think after the lazy performance against Manchester United, the visitors likely won’t take anyone lightly for a while, though. Look for PSG by 3 goals on Wednesday against Istanbul in group stage play.
