Two Serie A heavyweights will clash at Allianz Stadium with a lot on the line. Lazo absolutely needs this match on the road. A draw is no good, they’ve wasted too much time since returning to settle for 1 point. Upon returning from the break, there was a feeling in the air that Lazio were the team to beat for the Serie A title. I didn’t buy into it much, but Juventus was coming off a sloppy appearance in the Coppa Italia final and the public were jumping off the Juve bandwagon.
The fact that this was after the layoff was important, though. Juventus were not in fine form and looked rusty. They also likely took Napoli lightly and paid for it with a loss. That was a better explanation than Juventus are old, like seemed to be the consensus amongst the doubters. Cristiano Ronaldo quieted everyone down and put Juventus in the right direction once Serie A play resumed. Juventus are clear of Lazio by 8 points. It wasn’t that long ago people were discrediting Juventus following their Coppa Italia defeat. Look at them now.
Juventus enters Monday with a record of 24-5-4 and 77 points. Conversely, the Lazio are 21-6-6 with 69 points. That’s not good enough for second or even third. A two-team race between Juventus and Lazio for the Serie A title has developed into Lazio falling out of the picture. Atalanta and Inter Milan have since passed them on the table. Inter Milan are 5 games behind Juventus for the lead in Serie A.
Inter Milan weren’t really on the map early on in this restart. Here we are now, though, and Lazio needs a win today to get within 5 points of Juve. Lazio have looked disinterested in the post-lockdown phase of the season. There hasn’t been much effort or the feeling that they want it bad enough. Going through the motions is not going to work at this point in the season.
Lazio are on a three-match losing streak, with losses against AC Milan, Lecce, and Sassuolo. The 2-1 loss against Lecce sticks out like a sore thumb. And then following up with a 2-1 loss against Sassuolo after that performance was another bad look. They also tied against Udinese in a winnable match on Wednesday. A win would be huge for both clubs on Monday, with a win for Juventus getting them closer to the Serie A title, and Lazio need it to stay afloat in the race. Juventus vs. Lazio Serie A Betting Odds:
Juventus vs. Lazio Prediction:
Lazio have won just two matches since returning to the Serie A season. They beat Torino and Fiorentina, but that’s all they have to speak of in terms of wins. That suggests to me that they just haven’t cared. Despite being in the Serie A, Lazio has played disinterested football. That goes for both sides of the ball. They’ve been lazy in both regards. Mainly it’s been because of an offense that looks stuck in mud, though. They’ve scored just 0.66 goals per match since returning on June 24. That’s not going to get it done in high-scoring Serie A.
Ciro Immobile, who is deadlocked with Ronaldo with 29 goals and a tie for the Capocannoniere, must get hot down the stretch. Last week he said that Lazio is no longer enjoying themselves. He probably should have kept his thoughts to himself, but the results very much add up to that being the case. Considering that they were unbeaten in 21 straight matches before the layoff, the break sucked the win right out of their campaign. Perhaps a trip on the road to play Juventus can motivate them?
Lazio has not been at their best on the road in 2019-20. They have recorded 1.62 goals per game, while conceding 1.19 goals per match. Conversely, at home Lazio has netted 2.47 goals per game and allowed 0.94 goals per match. They are going into this match down talent. Several key injuries, including Stefan Radu, Joaquin Correa, Adam Marusic, Lucas Leiva, and Senad Lulic will be unavailable on Monday.
Immobile might have to do everything by himself on Monday. If Immobile is in A+ form, then Lazio might be able to pull off an upset or salvage a point. I’d have more faith in that happening at home, though. Juventus are deadly at home, with 2.12 goals scored per match, and just 0.81 goals conceded. Lazio might be able to keep Juve in check offensively to a degree, but their struggles on offence might be on full display again today. A scoreline of 2-1 or 3-1 in favour of Juventus is my prediction here.
