As always, in the remainder of this piece we will be investigating all key elements of both teams. We’ll start off with the crucial happenings in recent months as well as more concrete thoughts and picks coming into this encounter. If you haven’t already, go make yourself a cup of tea and get comfy – let’s slap together another winning wager!
Simeone Eliminated Title Holders Liverpool
Atletico Madrid eliminated Liverpool in the first round of playoffs! It’s old news, though, Atletico enjoyed their triumph over the Merseyside team all the way back in March. It was a marvelous feat, defeating Liverpool at its highest. However, Atletico Madrid’s gameplay isn’t viable against all types of teams. Many people point out that Leipzig’s attacking style might not suit Simeone’s men.
On the other hand, Leipzig eliminated Tottenham, last year’s grand finalists.
Even though Liverpool seemed like an easy to team to beat for Atleti, that doesn’t necessarily mean Leipzig will be the same story. Julian Nagelsmann’s Leipzig secured the third spot in the German Bundesliga, plus, they’ve done so with a solid goals scored/conceded ratio. 81 scored and 37 conceded, not too bad considering Bayern had 100/32.
As for Atletico, they also finished on the third spot (La Liga), but scored only 51 goals… that’s with additional four matches because La Liga has twenty teams in total. Talk about a completely different type of gameplay ideas and tactical approaches, huh?
No Werner no Party
Leipzig’s did win the third spot in the Bundesliga, but they lost their key player in the process. As many of you know already, Timo Werner is no longer a part of RB Leipzig. The 22-year-old German star departed for Chelsea for a €53M, leaving a massive dent in Leipzig’s starting eleven. And, mind you – we’re talking about the best RB Leipzig player in quite a while.
Timo Werner’s stats in the 2019/2020 season were absolutely amazing. The man had 28 goals and 8 assists, averaging 7.60 rating for the whole season. To put things into perspective – the second best-rated player in RB Leipzig’s lineup was Christopher Nkunku (7.33); he had 5 goals and 13 assists but played on far fewer matches than Werner.
However, Leipzig will have to find a new source of goals… and their newest signings aren’t really Werner’s caliber. Don’t get me wrong – the likes of Hee-chan Hwang, Hannes Wolf and Dani Olmo are all top-tier prospects, but it will take a few seasons before they can be put in the same sentence with the departed Werner. This could be problematic for Leipzig, and will definitely influence our final Leipzig vs. Atl. Madrid predictions.
Atl. Madrid Potential Problems
Is there a chance that this match gets postponed less than 24 hours before it’s supposed to start? Well, there’s nothing to worry about, apparently. Atletico’s squad has been tested again after showing two positive cases last week; according to aa.com, there are no new infections in the team. Offensive Argentine Angelo Correa and attacking-minded defender from Croatia, Sime Vrsaljko, tested positive and endangered our Leipzig vs. Atl. Madrid predictions.
Wrapping Everything Up
There’s nothing more to add on top of our Leipzig vs. Atl. Madrid predictions. It’s going to be a tricky contest, that’s for sure, but I strongly believe Simeone’s men will come out on top. The odds are actually quite good, especially considering the fact Leipzig is playing without Werner. The young German prodigy is brushing up in the UK, meaning Leipzig will have all the attacking prowess they can find if they are to penetrate Simeone’s concrete defensive wall.
Yep, I just couldn’t go with anything else other than a simple match-winner on Atletico Madrid. If this match was to be held at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, I would’ve gone with Leipzig, that’s for sure! However, as things stand right now, Simeone’s Atletico should prevail on neutral ground and qualify to the semifinals. They had their ups and downs throughout the season, but I reckon their triumph against Liverpool will help them in the rest of their UEFA CL campaign.
I can’t see Leipzig winning this, not without their key players in the starting lineup… In fact, I can’t see them scoring against Atletico, period. If you’re feeling lucky, you can always slap that wager somewhere too and hope for another hefty return.
