Liverpool vs. Southampton EPL Pick – Gameweek 17 Jan. 4

Monday night will see Liverpool eagerly looking to re-assume their position atop the Premier League table as they prepare to visit Southampton in Gameweek 17.

With Manchester United in blazing form of late, Liverpool enters this week tied on points with the Red Devils, albeit with a game in hand. Consecutive draws against lowly teams like West Brom and Newcastle have made some question Liverpool’s attack in recent weeks, and the talented Reds will be keen to prove their recent doubters otherwise.

For the Saints, they seem to have reverted back to last year’s form after a red-hot start earlier this season. They enter winless in four league matches, and are in grave danger of dropping out of the top half of the EPL table. For a side that had European competition ambition, it’s certainly been a disappointing run, and it won’t be any easier with Liverpool coming to town.

Despite the uncertainties of both clubs at the moment, one thing is for sure – when these clubs square off, excitement does follow. Liverpool vs. Southampton Pick:

While the Saints enter without any fresh injury concerns for their big clash vs. Liverpool, it remains to be seen how positive their tactics will be against a more talented side. Often times this year, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has opened things up and allowed his squad to attack – though Monday could be different.

As seen in previous weeks, Liverpool has struggled breaking down poorer clubs that focus on rigid positing, discipline, and containment to the outside. Southampton’s style is more set-up on intense pressure all across the pitch, relying on set pieces and elite finishing from a solid striking partnership in Che Adams and Danny Ings.

That seems like a risky strategy given Liverpool’s quick passing and excellent goal-scoring ability. Despite their woes of late, this is a squad that has seen it all and won it all under Jurgen Klopp, and they aren’t yet satisfied. Look for the Reds to counter the Saints’ 4-4-2 formation with a very attack-oriented 4-3-3 formation, relying on sweeping crosses and dangerous runs from their excellent fullback duo in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson. The Saints have been poor defending this style all season long, and there’s no reason to believe they’ve suddenly figured it out in time for this match.

MOTIVATED LIVERPOOL EAGER FOR GOALS
While Liverpool are still battling key injuries in the centre of their defense, it likely won’t matter on Monday as the Reds should be able to control the vast majority of possession and really control the flow and tempo of this match. With Man United breathing down their necks, they have the push they need for the second-half of the season in their quest to repeat as title holders. Southampton’s back-line cannot contain the trio of Mane, Salah, and Firmino up top – and it’s beyond unlikely those three don’t connect to score for a third straight outing.

Southampton is fading and they’re facing Liverpool at a bad time. Hungry and motivated, expect a vintage showing from Klopp’s club, en route to a comfortable victory. Backing them -1 goal offers some solid value to close out Gameweek 17.

My Pick
Liverpool -1
