Mainz vs. RB Leipzig Pick – Bundesliga Matchday 27 – May 24

Both Leipzig and Mainz were involved in pretty surprising draws the last time we saw them. For RB Leipzig, it was a disappointing and frustrating encounter against Freiburg. With Leipzig clinging to points, needing to secure every one that comes their way – they left two on the board in a shocking draw to lowly Freiburg. They’ll be pining for a big-time response against Mainz this week.

ANd for Mainz, it seemed like more of the same for the struggling club last week vs. Koln – going down 2-nil early on. That said, all the credit to this pesky club as they battled back admirably, securing a much-needed point as the game finished all-square at 2-2. Like Leipzig, Mainz is currently in a race of their own – except this one is to survive the relegation drop. They sit just four points clear of 17th place Dusseldorf, and are likely going to need more surprise results to avoid going down. Sunday’s encounter will be tough however, as a motivated Leipzig continue their push for the title.

Though Leipzig haven’t lost since January in the Bundesliga, they are drawing inferior sides far too often. The killer instinct is missing, and with critics and supporters calling out their quality – this will be a big test for one of Germany’s most talented clubs.

With both squads in desperate needs of points on Sunday, it should create a very intense atmosphere in Mainz. Can RB Leipzig respond after weeks of disappointment? Read on below for matchup odds, a betting breakdown, and a tactical analysis as Leipzig take on Mainz in Matchday 27.

Mainz 05 vs. RB Leipzig Pick:

It has certainly been a lengthy week of preparation for RB Leipzig. After a poor showing coming out of the pandemic pause, Leipzig know they need to bounce back on Sunday with a statement victory. This is an immensely talented group, with ownership that has poured millions of dollars into making them a winner. If Leipzig fails to take the next step this campaign, you have to wonder about the future of this talented core.

If Leipzig want any chance of winning the Bundesliga – they simply need 3 points on the road against Mainz. They will be getting some reinforcements back into the squad, which should help their cause. Look for Dayot Upamecano to return to the defense, while Emil Forsberg will play a crucial ball-winning role in the midfield. Up top, the striking duo of Yussuf Poulsen and Timo Werner remains one of the best in European soccer, and they should be able to wreak havoc on a poor Mainz defense.

For the hosts, Mainz will welcome back some bodies from the injured list – though whether or not they’ll be able to make a difference remains to be seen. Mainz have been one of the leakiest sides in the Bundesliga, something that is not a good recipe at all as they prepare to take on Leipzig. Last week Mainz were torn to shreds against Koln for large stretches, and though they fought back – don’t expect Leipzig to grant any mercy here.

Leipzig remain one of the top teams in Europe, and need to be considered with the quality of Bayern Munich and Dortmund. The fact that they aren’t getting it at the moment has to be irritating for this talented group, and expect them to show that on Sunday morning. Mainz are nowhere near their class.

Expect Leipzig to control the bulk of possession, using deft passing and clinical finishing to put on an offensive show. They’re stronger all over the pitch – with ball-winners in the midfield, speed on the flanks, and goal-scorers up top.

Leipzig are back to full strength with their attacking pieces, and should be able to comfortably put three or four goals into the net on Sunday. Expect Timo Werner to return to the scoresheet as well. The price is a tad juicy, so shop around and look for Leipzig -1 on the spread markets. There’s a slight chance of a push, but it seems unlikely the Mainz defense can withstand this Leipzig onslaught.

Prediction: RB Leipzig 3-0

My Pick
Leipzig -1
